
Cubs Fall in Series Finale vs Whitecaps 6-2

South Bend, IN: In a back and forth series over the past four days, the South Bend Cubs and West Michigan Whitecaps battled and exchanged runs on a special Memorial Day afternoon game at Four Winds Field. With two unanswered runs scored from the top of the 6th inning on, the Whitecaps walked away with the series finale 6-2 win.
With Javier Assad taking the mound, who is the only South Bend Cub pitcher with four wins in 2018, South Bend got on the board early by capitalizing on a bases loaded chance off of starter Matt Manning. Manning walked Nelson Velazquez to bring in the game's first run scored by Jhonny Bethencourt.
The Whitecaps answered with two runs off of Assad in the top of the 3rd and 5th innings. Assad took the loss Monday afternoon while finishing five 5.0 innings pitched, four runs allowed, and nine hits. The 20-year-old right hander struck out seven Whitecaps.
Felix Viloria earned the win for West Michigan with 2.2 innings of one run ball. Burris Warner finished the day for the Whitecaps with 2.1 scoreless innings to pick up his first save of 2018.
Although they lost Monday, the Cubs won the overall series against West Michigan three games out of four. South bend was led all weekend long by Velazquez who finished the series with 4 RBI, and three combined on Sunday through Monday. The 19-year-old Velazquez went 2/3 on Memorial Day with a walk.
A double by Christian Donahue in the bottom of the 5th inning off of Viloria extended his hitting streak to nine straight games. The Hawaii native has excelled with South Bend in the month of May. The lefty's average sits at .333 after the total eight game homestand.
With the loss, the Cubs record drops to 22-27 overall heading into a quick road trip to face the Great Lakes Loons. It will be a three game series between the Cubs and Loons up in Midland, Michigan before South Bend returns home for six straight games in the first week of June.
