Sacramento River Cats News Release

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The River Cats tied the game at four in the bottom of the eighth, but gave up the game-winning run in the ninth, ultimately losing to the Nashville Sounds 5-4 on Tuesday night at Raley Field.

Sacramento got the scoring started early, plating two in the bottom of the first inning on a Grant Green RBI-double and a Josh Donaldson run-scoring single. Tyson Ross held the Sounds scoreless through five innings, having allowed just two hits with seven strikeouts. Nashville then mounted its comeback.

They scored three times in the top of the sixth, taking a 3-2 lead. After the Sounds scored again in the seventh, the River Cats tied the game with a run in each the seventh and eighth innings. Unfortunately for Sacramento, Nashville took the lead for the last time in the top of the ninth, scoring on a Merkin Valdez wild pitch. Shane Peterson led off the bottom of the ninth with a single, but his teammates were unable to bring him home, losing 5-4.

Green extended his hitting streak to a team-season-high 14 games. Mitchell legged out his 10th triple of the season, putting him within one of tying the franchise record. Barton and Peterson paced the River Cats offense, collecting two hits apiece.

Ross departed after six innings, allowing six hits, three runs and zero walks with seven strikeouts. Valdez suffered his first loss of the year, giving up one run in one inning of work. Sounds righty Jesus Sanchez blew the save but earned his third win, while Rob Wooten tallied his third save.

The final game of the homestand comes during a Nine Innings at Noon Business Persons' Special presented by yp.com at 12:05 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon at Raley Field. River Cats righty Bruce Billings (7-4, 3.67 ERA) will start opposite Sounds right-handed pitcher Hiram Burgos (0-1, 7.84 ERA).
