Reno Tenth Inning Takes Series

Des Moines, IA - The Cubs ended up on the losing end of an extra inning, southpaw showdown at Principal Park Wednesday afternoon, falling to Reno 5-1 in ten. In his fourth start of the season, Ryan Rowland-Smith tossed his second straight quality start. Iowa (44-75) outhit Reno (70-49) 6-4 in the loss.

The Aces put together a four-run tenth, despite only knocking four hits in the game. A three-run, pinch-hit home run to straight away center field in the tenth from Mike Jacobs sealed the win for the Aces. All but one of Reno's runs came on the long ball.

Tyler Skaggs shut down the Cubs offense, allowing just one run on three hits while fanning six over six innings of work. The Iowa Aussie matched Skaggs with six innings of one-run ball, fanned four, walked three and surrendered just two hits.

Reno's first hit against Rowland-Smith landed over the wall in left field to give the Aces a 1-0 lead in the first. The Aces' offense would not get another base knock until a Tyler Bortnick double in the fifth.

Dave Sappelt collected the Cubs first hit off Skaggs in the fifth inning with a one-out double off the wall in left. Rowland-Smith helped is own cause with an infield single to lead off the sixth for Iowa's second hit. Alfredo Amezaga took first on a hit by pitch before Jim Adduci loaded the bases with an infield single. Greg Rohan skyed a fly ball to the warning track in left to plate Rowland-Smith and knot the score at one.

Blake Parker tossed a 1-2-3 seventh in his second rehab outing with Iowa. Jay Jackson followed facing three batters in the eighth after Blake Lalli gunned down his second base runner of the game at second. A scoreless ninth for Jackson gave Iowa a chance to win it in the ninth.

Lalli dropped a bloop single in short left field with two down in the ninth off Jonathon Albaladajo, but the Cubs failed to plate the game-winner. Albaladajo went on to earn the win after two scoreless innings of relief.

Jackson returned to pitch the tenth and hit a batter and allowed a single with one down to put runners on the corners. A fielder's choice RBI for Eaton plated the go-ahead run for Reno. Mike Jacobs blasted a pinch-hit homer to pad the Aces lead and pin Jackson with the loss. Bryan Shaw closed the door in the tenth to pick up the save.

The Cubs have an off day tomorrow before hitting the road for an eight game trip beginning on Friday in Las Vegas. Iowa returns to Principal Park for the last home stand of the season on August 18 to open a four-game set with Memphis.
