River Bandits Catcher Castillo Will Start All-Star Game

DAVENPORT, Iowa (JUNE 12, 2012) - Quad Cities River Bandits catcher Juan Castillo will join teammate Colin Walsh in the starting lineup for the Western Division All-Star team at the 2012 Midwest League All-Star Game hosted by the Kane County Cougars June 19 in Geneva, Ill., the Midwest League announced on Tuesday.

Castillo, 22, had been named a reserve for the Western Division squad along with River Bandits infielder Luis Mateo and right-handed reliever Heath Wyatt when the initial rosters were announced on June 4. Castillo will start in place of Peoria catcher Rafael Lopez, who has been placed on the disabled list. Walsh was named the starting designated hitter for the Western Division on the initial roster.

Castillo is a native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as a non-drafted free agent in July 2006. He was a New York-Penn League midseason All-Star for the short-season Batavia Muckdogs last season. Castillo has a .299 batting average that ranks third on the Quad Cities team, a career-high five home runs and 30 RBIs. He led the Midwest League with a .448 batting average on April 18. Castillo had his first career two-homer game as part of a 4-for-4 night at Cedar Rapids April 13, and he homered in consecutive games May 10-11 at Wisconsin. He also has a pair of seven-game hitting streaks this season. He played in 13 games for Quad Cities in 2011, and he has played 46 games for the River Bandits this season.
