
Angels draft picks Eric Stamets and Zach Wright join Kernels

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announce that shortstop Eric Stamets and catcher Zach Wright will join the Kernels and that catcher Carlos Lugo and INF Wendell Soto have been assigned to the Orem Owlz of the Pioneer League. Mike LaCassa, Minor League Operations Manager for the LA Angels, announced the move on Tuesday.
Stamets and Wright are the Angels' sixth and 12th round selections in the 2012 Free Agent Draft.
Stamets was taken in the sixth round out of Evansville University. The Dublin, OH native hit .316 with 19 doubles, one HR and 27 RBI in 59 games for the Purple Aces. He also stole 30 bases in 39 attempts.
Wright was selected in the 12th round out of East Carolina University. He is a native of Goldsboro, NC and in 59 games for the Pirates, he hit .294 with 12 doubles, 5 HR and 39 RBI. He also threw out 13 runners in 25 stolen base attempts.
Soto and Lugo were both members of the Kernels 2012 Opening Day Roster. Soto hit .216 with 5 HR and 23 RBI in 51 games for the Kernels and Lugo was batting .167 with 2 RBI in 28 games.
Stamets and Wright are active and available for tonight's 6:35 pm game with the Burlington Bees. With today's transactions, the Kernels roster remains at the MWL maximum of 25 active players, with two players on the disabled list.
The Kernels continue the current six game home stand with a 6:35 pm game against the Burlington Bees, the Midwest League affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. The current home stand continues through Thursday, June 14th.
