Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - It has been since 2005 the last time the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were in the Midwest League Playoffs and they will head back there in 2012 as the Western Division First-Half Champions. The T-Rats wrapped up their title with an extra-innings, 3-1 win over the Clinton LumberKings on Tuesday night at Ashford University Field.

Both teams exchanged runs in the second inning with Wisconsin scoring first when first baseman Nick Ramirez hit the first pitch he saw from Brett Shankin over the batters eye for his fourth home run of the year. Clinton came back with a run of their own on a sac fly from Anthony Phillips but left the bases loaded after Dillon Hazlett grounded out to end the frame.

Both teams went quietly and quickly throughout the rest of regulation as the pitchers took over. Shankin worked seven innings and allowed one run on four hits. He struck out five in his third quality start of the year. Wisconsin starter Will West went five innings and allowed a run on six hits. Jacob Barnes, who worked in relief for Wisconsin, was tremendous over five innings. The right-hander shut out Clinton and allowed only one hit while recording nine strikeouts as he got his third win of the year.

Wisconsin got two runs off Kyle Hunter in the 10th inning on a run-scoring base hit by Brandon Macias and a sac fly by Max Walla. Clinton went in order in the bottom half and Wisconsin had their title.

The two teams will meet tomorrow night at Ashford University Field. Right-hander Trevor Miller (3-4, 4.14) starts for Clinton on his 21st birthday and right-hander Matt Miller (4-5, 4.41) gets the call for the Timber Rattlers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
