Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons defeated the Dayton Dragons 6-4 Tuesday night at Dow Diamond in front of 3,339 fans, putting up five runs in the third inning with home runs from Scott Schebler and Jesse Bosnik.
Down 2-1 in the third, second baseman Jesus Arredondo got the ball rolling with a triple to right-center field and scored the tying run on O'Koyea Dickson's double. Schebler stepped in next to drive a home run down the right-field line for the two-run lead.
"Just about everything [was working]," Scott Schebler said of his outing, in which he went 3-for-4 with three extra-base hits. "Nothing really went wrong...It's great [to be a part of the big inning]. It gets everybody "Ëhoorah, hoorah' and something about putting solid wood on the ball is contagious."
The homer was Schebler's fifth of the season. Loons outfielder Nick Akins followed up with a double to set-up Jesse Bosnik for his two-run homer later in the inning. The inning marked only the fifth time the Loons have scored five runs or more in a single inning this season, putting the home team up 6-2. The outing was Schebler's fourth game in which he recorded three or more hits.
The Loons took the initial lead in the first inning when Schebler knocked his 17th double of the season to score Arredondo, who had singled earlier in the inning, but the Dragons fought back with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Trailing 6-2, Dayton picked up two more in the fourth inning on Sean Buckley's two-run homer.
Starting on the hill was Loons All-Star Jarret Martin, who allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits and five walks through five innings. He picked up his third win of the season in the effort and added four strikeouts on the night to bring his total to 71 on the season. Matt Shelton burnt through three solid innings of relief work for the Loons, shutting down the Dragons and limiting them to one hit. Yimi Garcia pitched in the ninth to earn his 10th save.
The Loons play game two of their six-game homestand on Wednesday at Dow Diamond as RHP Ralston Cash (1-1, 4.50) makes the start against the Whitecaps RHP Jacob Johnson (0-1, 3.00) at 7:05 p.m. Making a special appearance at the park will be Red Wings play-by-play broadcaster Ken Daniels. He will be on hand to sign autographs and mingle with fans as a part of the Red Wings Legends Series, presented by MidMichigan Health.
The Great Lakes Loons are a sixth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and are in the middle of their 5th Anniversary Celebration, which kicked off in August 2011 and will continue throughout the 2012 season. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
