Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Quad Cities River Bandits entered play Tuesday having scored 33 runs in their last two games on the road at Burlington, but could manage just one run on three hits in six innings against Cougars' right-hander Kellen Moen. Lane Adams went 2-for-4 with a towering home run to left field and Jorge Bonifacio went 2-for-5 with three RBI to lead Kane County to their sixth win in seven games against Quad Cities this season, by a 7-5 final in front of 5,029 fans at Modern Woodmen Park.

Kane County (34-31) broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth, scoring three runs off Gaviglio (3-5). Shortstop Yowill Espinal led off the inning with a single and advanced on a wild pitch. With two outs in the inning, Daniel Mateo hit a double that scored Espinal and Jorge Bonifacio hit a two-run home run to right-center field, to make it a 4-1 game.

Gaviglio pitched into the eighth inning, but allowed six runs, five earned, on 11 hits, striking out four and walking none. Kellen Moen (3-2) held Quad Cities in check, allowing just one earned run in the first inning, and just one hit and one walk after the third inning. He lasted six innings, allowing three hits and three walks, while striking out four.

The Cougars added three more runs in the top of the eighth off right-handed reliever Ricky Martinez on a Lane Adams solo home run and a throwing error by Quad Cities' shortstop Matt Williams that allowed Dean Espy and Murray Watts to score. Martinez was charged with an unearned run in the inning, his home debut for Quad Cities.

Quad Cities scored once in the third on a balk by Moen that allowed Luis Mateo to score from third. The River Bandits did not score again until the bottom of the eighth inning, when they plated two runs. Tyler Rahmatulla hit an RBI triple that scored Nick Martini and he came around to score on a single by Juan Castillo.

The River Bandits scored twice in the bottom of the ninth off reliever Malcom Culver, who came on with two outs in the eighth. With two on and two out, Colin Walsh hit an RBI double down the right field line, scoring Williams and Martini. Martini tied the season-high for Quad Cities, with three walks in the game. At the plate as the potential tying run, Rahmatulla popped out to shallow center field and Culver picked up his second save of the season.

With the Quad Cities loss and a 6-5 Beloit win Tuesday night, the River Bandits are officially eliminated from the Midwest League first-half playoff race. This marks the first time the River Bandits did not finish either first or second in the Western Division since the second half of the 2009 season, in which they placed fifth.
