Rivalry Flares as Hawks Beat Saints

WATERLOO, Iowa - The return to Waterloo was exactly as advertised. A topsy-turvy, one-goal game finished after an eruption of penalties and post-whistle scrums, as the Black Hawks topped the Dubuque Fighting Saints 3-2 on Friday night at Young Arena.
Following a match penalty to Waterloo goaltender Robbie Beydoun, the Fighting Saints had a full five-minute power play to work with in the third period. Unfortunately for them, a turnover in the high slot led to Bailey Conger breaking through the defense and scoring a shorthanded goal to put the Hawks up 3-1. That goal stood as the game-winner.
Severi Isokangas, the backup, was forced off the bench cold to replace Beydoun, and was welcomed to the game with a power play tally from R.J. Murphy to cut the lead to one. However, penalties and chippy play prevented the comeback from coming any closer. The Hawks shut it down throughout the stretch drive en route to the win.
Reigning USHL Goaltender of the Week Jaxon Castor kept the game close throughout with several sensational saves in the second period. With the score at 2-1, he kept it there with a sliding stop on leading scorer Nick Swaney on a late power play chance. In the end, he made 21 saves on the night.
Chicago Blackhawks prospect Jake Ryczek started the scoring 41 seconds into the first period with a fluttering puck from the right point that found a way through into the net. David Brumm did not let that celebration last long with a goal of his own, a turnaround wrist shot from the left wing boards following a great chance created by Patrick Kudla just two minutes after Ryczek's goal.
Waterloo eventually took the lead after a faceoff win halfway through the first period. A shot bounded off of Castor's mask, and fell right at the feet of Garrett Klee, who deposited the puck into the open cage to put the Black Hawks up 2-1.
Both teams had opportunities aplenty on special teams, but it was Waterloo's penalty kill that eventually won the day. While the Hawks' PK allowed a goal on a 5-on-3 chance, and the Fighting Saints' unit did not, they took care of all of a five-minute match penalty, and six other opportunities to keep Dubuque off of the board.
