Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Muskegon, MI-Mikhail Berdin set a Stampede franchise record with 59 saves and the Herd got goals from Will Garin and Lean Bergmann to top the Muskegon Lumberjacks 2-1 Friday night at L.C. Walker Arena. The Herd won despite being outshot 60-22 on the night to improve to 4-5-1 on the season and 2-1-1 on the road. Berdin earned his second straight win in goal and broke the Stampede's single game save record of 57 set by Zach Sikich (1999-00) and Craig Vardy (2003-04). The Ufa, Russia native made several highlight reel saves throughout the game to help lift the Herd to the win.
Despite a long bus ride over the last day and a half, the Stampede looked fresh to begin the game and came out with good energy to start the game. That paid off just 5:42 into the game when Will Garin tallied his first goal of the season in his first game with the Herd. Lean Bergman picked up the puck and sent a pass into the slot to Garin who made a nice move and put the puck past Muskegon goaltender Keith Petruzzelli to give the Herd a 1-0 edge. The rest of the period was controlled by the Lumberjacks who quickly woke up and threw 21 shots in the period, but Stampede goaltender Mikhail Berdin was solid between the pipes, denying several good scoring opportunities for the Lumberjacks. Muskegon outshot Sioux Falls 21-9.
Muskegon kept the pressure on during the second period and continued to fire shot after shot on Berdin who remained strong throughout the period. The highlight of the game came midway through the second period when Muskegon broke into the Stampede zone on a 3-on-0, but Berdin made an amazing pad save to keep the Lumberjacks off the board. The game remained 1-0 Sioux Falls after two periods with Muskegon outshooting the Herd 19-5.
The Lumberjacks finally broke through 2:25 into the third period when Logan Drevitch broke into the Stampede zone and wristed a shot from inside the left circle past the glove of Berdin to make it a 1-1 game. That goal seem to lift the Stampede more than Muskegon though as the Stampede picked up their offensive pressure and turned the tables on the Lumberjacks. The Herd went ahead for good at 13:31 when Lean Bergmann tallied his second of the season. Garin broke into the offensive zone with Jack St. Ivany and Bergman. St. Ivany took a pass at the top of the left circle that was stopped by Pertuzzelli, but the rebound bounced out to Bergmann who quickly wristed the puck into the back of the net to give Sioux Falls a 2-1 advantage. Muskegon would pull their goaltender late to try and tie the game, but the Stampede defense and Berdin stood strong and held off the attack to earn the victory.
The Stampede and Lumberjacks will battle again Saturday night at 6:15 PM at L.C. Walker Arena. Fans can catch all the action live on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 107.9-FM and KELO.com or watch live on MyHockeyTV.
