Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels (12-9) rode seven shutout innings from starter Mike MacDonald to a 2-0 series-opening victory over the Bowie Baysox (12-10) in front of 7,646 at The Diamond on Friday night. The win stretched the Flying Squirrels win-streak to four games overall and also gives them four straight victories at The Diamond.
Pitching dominated the early portion of the ballgame, but Richmond was able to break through against Bowie right-hander Steve Johnson in the third inning. Johnson issued a lead-off walk to Jackson Williams. Williams then scored all the way from first base when Clay Timpner lifted an RBI double over the head of Baysox left fielder Tyler Henson to give the Flying Squirrels a 1-0 lead.
The Squirrels tacked on their second and final run against Johnson in the sixth inning when Roger Kieschnick delivered a one-out single. A batter later, Nick Noonan doubled down the first-base line to score him, and the Squirrels led 2-0.
Meanwhile, MacDonald (1-2) was magnificent for seven innings, putting Richmond on course for its fourth shutout of the season. The right-hander allowed just two hits - one a bunt single - while matching a career-high with eight strikeouts. He walked one, but cruised to his first win of the season, also establishing his longest start of the year.
Following MacDonald's departure, the bullpen took Richmond the rest of the way. Right-hander Ronnie Ray faced the minimum in a scoreless eighth before turning it over to right-hander Rafael Cova. Cova earned his league-leading seventh save of the season, nailing down the win with the help of a highlight-reel double-play behind him in the ninth.
Johnson (0-2) was the hard-luck loser, rebounding from a 39-pitch third inning to work through six innings. He allowed two runs on five hits, walking one and striking out two.
Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for Saturday night at 6:35 PM at The Diamond. LHP Clayton Tanner (1-2, 2.25) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Chorye Spoone (1-2, 5.21) for Bowie.
