Curve Hold Off Senators With 7-4 Win

HARRISBURG, Pa - The Altoona Curve were able to survive two separate comeback attempts by the Harrisburg Senators (AA - Washington Nations) and use a number of big hits to hang on to a 7-4 victory on Friday night at Metro Bank Park on City Island.

Altoona (14-6) has now won three straight games.

After jumping out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to back-to-back RBI extra-base hits by Jared Hughes and Chase d'Arnaud in the second inning, Harrisburg (10-11) would immediately answer with a run in their half of the frame.

Hughes (4-1) and Senators' lefty Aaron Thompson (1-2) squared off through the majority of the game and did not permit any additional scoring until the game was turned over to the bullpens.

In the top of the eighth, the Curve would rally for four-straight two-out hits off of reliever Adam Carr. Josh Harrison singled before he was tripled home to by Miles Durham to give the Curve a 3-1 lead. Altoona would extend it with a two-run home run by Alex Presley, whose second long ball of the season extended his league-high hitting streak to 14 games and gave Altoona a comfortable 5-1 advantage.

Harrisburg would storm back in their half of the eighth plating three runs off reliever Dustin Molleken. After an RBI groundout by Brad Coon, Danny Espinosa blasted a two-run homer to once again cut the Curve lead to one, making it 5-4.

Daniel Moskos who would notch his fifth save in as many opportunities came on to record the final two outs of the eighth inning while Altoona would grab two more insurance runs in the ninth. Jordy Mercer blasted a two-run home run in the ninth to put the Curve up 7-4 while Moskos got the final three outs in the bottom half of the inning to preserve the win.

The Curve will send right-hander Derek Hankins (1-0, 2.31) to the mound at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night in the second game of the three-game series. Harrisburg will turn the ball over to southpaw Tom Milone (1-0, 4.19). Radio coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. on flagship station ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and Altoona Curve Radio Network affiliates.
