Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - On Wednesday night at BB&T Coastal Field, Kinston Indians starter Alex White held the Pelicans hitless through five and two-thirds innings. On Saturday night, Salem Red Sox starter Stolmy Pimentel made White's outing look like nothing more than a quality start.

Pimentel tossed six perfect innings, retiring all 18 Pelicans he faced on a dazzling night, and his offense supplied more than enough offensive support in a 9-1 victory at BB&T Coastal Field.

The Red Sox, in fact, supplied more than enough support in the top of the first inning alone. Facing Pelicans starter Brett Oberholtzer, Salem slapped around five first-inning singles, and Peter Hissey, Oscar Tejeda, and Ryan Lavarnway all came around to score for an early 3-0 Salem lead. In the third, Lavarnway led off with a double, continuing his torrid hitting pace against Pelicans pitching, and came home two outs later on Alex Hassan's second homer of the season to make it a 5-0 Red Sox advantage. Through five games against the Pelicans this season, Lavarnway is batting .583 (14-for-24) with two doubles, a homer, 13 runs batted in, and a video game-like 1.407 OPS.

Pimentel was nothing short of sensational. The right-hander from San Cristobal, Dominican Republic fanned four over his six innings of work. In the third inning, he struck out Yoel Campusano and Amadeo Zazueta on back-to-back called third strikes for the first two outs of the frame. In the sixth, right fielder Hassan made a sliding grab near the line on a Campusano blooper. Pimentel (4-2) departed after the sixth and picked up the win. In the seventh, reliever Will Latimer retired the Pelicans in order to keep the perfect game hope alive.

Myrtle Beach finally broke through in the eighth when Gerry Rodriguez and Matt Kennelly traded places on inning-opening doubles, the former scoring on the latter's, to end the perfect game, no-hitter, and shutout bids. By then, however, the outcome was nearly certain. Salem added four more runs between the sixth and eighth, the final coming on a Ryan Dent RBI double. The Pelicans recorded just four hits in the loss.

Sunday's series finale will see the Birds try to salvage one game of the three-game set and two of their seven-game homestand. The Pelicans will send starter Matt Crim (2-1, 3.82) against Salem right-hander Brock Huntzinger (2-2, 3.31) with first pitch slated for 3:05 PM. "Pelican Pregame" presented by the Hampton Inn gets rolling with Tyler Maun at 2:45 on ESPN Radio The Team and MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
