Potomac Nationals News Release
Tyler Moore hit Potomac's first grand slam of the season as the Nationals defeated the Blue Rocks 7-4 in front of a near-capacity crowd of 5,432 at The Pfitz. The win improves the P-Nats to 16-20 - good for second in the Northern Division while Wilmington falls to 15-21.
Moore's Slam came in a five-run third for Potomac. With one out and no one on Derek Norris started a string of five consecutive hits with an infield single. Mike Burgess, Brian Peacock and Bill Rhinehart followed up with singles of their own making the score 1-0. With the bases loaded, Moore hit a 0-2 pitch off the scoreboard in left center to give Potomac their first lead of the day 5-2. It was Moore's sixth home run of the season.
Wilmington scored one in each of the second and the third. In the top of the second, Jamar Walton hit a leadoff triple into the right field corner and he was driven in by an Eddie Prasch double. Eric Hosmer hit a homer on a 2-1 pitch in the third with two outs and no one on to deep right center to give the Blue Rocks a 2-0 lead.
The other two Wilmington runs came on Jamie Romak's second home run in as many days. He smashed a 1-1 pitch deep over the left field wall and into the forest with Hosmer on second to bring the Blue Rocks within 5-4.
But that was it for Wilmington's scoring. Marcos Frias went five innings for his second victory of the season. The Potomac bullpen came up big with Cory VanAllen, Dan Leatherman and Cole Kimball going four scoreless. Kimball induced a double play to end the game and stay a perfect five for five on save opportunities this season.
Potomac added two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh. With Branden Lafferty pitching, Mike Burgess led off the inning with a double and stole third. Brian Peacock knocked Burgess in on a line drive to right field. After Rhinehart and Moore were retired and Peacock sole second, Tim Pahuta hit a clutch, two-out double to score Peacock and the Nationals took a 7-4 lead.
The rubber match of the series is tomorrow afternoon in Woodbridge at 1:05 p.m. Potomac sends Brad Peacock (1-4, 5.11 in 6 starts) to face Tim Melville (1-5, 9.76 in 9 starts).
