Calgary, AB - The Calgary Roughnecks today signed Kyle Wailes, the club's No. 1 pick (9th overall) in the recent National Lacrosse League entry draft, to a one-year contract.

"Though it is still up in the air as to how many games and how much time he will be able to devote to the Roughnecks this season, we are pleased to have him under contract," said Kurt Silcott, the Roughnecks Vice-President and General Manager.

Wailes has a high-level job in New York's financial district and the question of his availability to Calgary is under discussion.

"Now we have him inked," said Silcott, "we can go about the business of getting Kyle acclimated to his new team-mates, while also determining how often he can get to Calgary for practices and games."

Silcott continued, "He is an obvious talent and but for his work commitments in New York City, he would probably have gone far higher than ninth in the draft.

"But we feel our team is strong enough that we can wait for him to become available. At that time, we will reap the benefits."

Wailes is a 6 ft. 1 in, 195 lb. leftie. He is a graduate of Brown University.

The Roughnecks also announced that work duties will keep veteran Grant Hamilton from playing in 2007.

The non-nonsense defender is a police sergeant in Victoria, British Columbia.

Hamilton has been placed on the Protected Players list alongside Rob Kirkby, another experienced defender who will not be able to play in 2007 also because of job commitments.
