Frisco RoughRiders News Release
FRISCO, Texas - The pitching of Michael Ballard and Joselo Diaz and a timely double by Dustin Majewski proved sufficient in Frisco's 3-2 win over the Hooks Sunday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
The Hooks, now 1-4 in the second half, grabbed the lead in the third. Lou Santangelo singled with one out and advanced to second on a throwing error. Santangelo took third on a ground ball out by Richie Paz and scored on Drew Sutton's single.
Frisco, 5-0 in the half, knotted the score in the fourth. Walks by Majewski and Adam Fox and a misplay by Paz at third on a grounder from Thomas Berkery loaded the bases for Corey Ragsdale, whose fly ball out to right plated Majewski to level the issue at 1-1.
Corpus Christi rallied with two out to retake the lead in the sixth. Singles by Rob Cosby and Ole Sheldon put runners at first and second for Val Majewski, who was added to the Hooks' roster Sunday. The left-handed hitter stroked a single to right to get Cosby home for a 2-1 Corpus Christi lead.
The RoughRiders netted the decisive runs in their half of the sixth. Emerson Frostad singled with one out and raced home on Dustin Majewski's double to the gap in left-center. Fox's ground ball out moved Majewski to third, and Berkery's infield hit brought him in to make it 3-2 Frisco.
Diaz, in just his fourth appearance out of the pen since joining the RoughRider staff, did the heavy lifting the rest of the way. He fanned four and stranded four base runners during his three innings of work to earn his second save. He preserved the win for Ballard (6-3), who allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits over six frames. Ballard struck out five.
Tip Fairchild started for the Hooks and pitched well, holding Frisco to a run on three hits and four walks over four innings. He struck out three. Ryan McKeller (2-4) was touched for two runs in three innings.
Val Majewski, no relation to Frisco's Dustin Majewski, was signed to a free-agent contract by the Astros after playing 50 games this season for the Newark Bears in the independent Atlantic League. The former Oriole farmhand, who played nine games for Baltimore in 2004, was batting .368-8-47 for the Bears, ranking among the league leaders in hitting and RBI's. He played in left field and batted fifth for the Hooks Sunday.
Majewski was added to the roster after closer Kyle Middleton got called back to Triple-A Round Rock. This is Middleton's second stint with the Express this season.
Shortstop Wladimir Sutil singled in the seventh to extend his hitting streak to nine games.
Third baseman Chris Johnson missed his second straight game after suffering a five-stitch cut near his chin in Friday's 13-inning game at Frisco.
The series with Frisco concludes with an 11:00 a.m. start Monday. Sean Walker (1-5) starts for the Hooks while Thomas Diamond (1-1) gets the ball for the RoughRiders.
