The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today the signing of Ricky Schmitt to the active roster. Financial details of the agreement were not released.
Schmitt (6'3 - 213) joins the Riders after most recently spending time with the Arizona Cardinals during the 2012 NFL pre-season where he punted 12 times for a 44.8 yard average. The 27-year old Virginia native began his pro career originally signing an undrafted free-agent contract with the Cardinals in 2007. Schmitt also spent time in the NFL with San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Oakland, Tennessee and San Diego.
A graduate of Shepherd University (West Virginia) where he excelled in both punting and placekicking, Schmitt was named first team All-WVIAC three-times as a punter and was a two-time first team selection as a kicker.
