Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release

WINNIPEG, MB – For two seasons running, defensive back Ricky Bell has quietly gone about his job of shutting down opposing receivers on behalf of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Now, Bell's quiet play has been noticed by those around the league, as the CFL today named him its Player of the Week in the defensive category.

Bell was a game-breaker against the Saskatchewan Roughriders last Thursday (July 8), leading the Blue Bombers to their first win of the 2004 season with his outstanding play.

Bell intercepted Rider quarterback Henry Burris and returned the ball 39 yards to set up a Troy Westwood field goal. Then with the game tied 15-15 in the early 4th Quarter, Bell scooped up a fumble forced by teammate Elfrid Payton and raced 28 yards for the game-winning touchdown.

The touchdown – like today's Player of the Week Award – is the first of Bell's CFL career.
