CFL names players of the week
Published on July 13, 2004 under Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release
Offensive Player of the Week
RB - Autrey Denson #6
Montreal Alouettes
Highlights
Denson's performance of 21 rushes for 104 yards and two (2) receptions for 19 yards was highlighted by four (4) touchdowns - three (3) rushing and one (1) receiving.
Game Notes:
Denson showed good vision and run instincts, as well as patience. Using his blockers, he hit the seams quickly and side stepped tackles. Denson has good explosiveness and now that the Alouettes have incorporated him into their attack, you will see him break away for long runs.
1st Runner Up: Charles Roberts #1, Winnipeg Blue Bombers
2nd Runner Up: Michael Pringle #34, Edmonton Eskimos
Judge: Bob Krouse
Defensive Player of the Week
DB - Ricky Bell #20
Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Highlights
Bell had three (3) individual tackles, on (1) knockdown in the end zone, one (1) interception for 39 yards and one (1) fumble recovery which he ran 26 yards for a touchdown.
Game Notes:
Bell has a lot of savvy, instinct and great cover skills. He lined up against the Roughriders top receiver and showed tight coverage, almost shutting him down. His zone awareness is outstanding, dropping from his backside position he intercepted an intended crossing pattern pass. Bell is never out of control and takes the best angles.
1st Runner Up: Duane Butler #25, Montreal Alouettes
2nd Runner Up: Signor Mobley #27, Edmonton Eskimos
Judge: Bob Krouse
Lineman of the Week
DE - Elfrid Payton #56
Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Highlights
Payton had an individual tackle, two (2) hurries, two (2) recovered fumbles and forced one fumble which led to a teammate recovering for a touchdown.
Game Notes:
Quarterbacks beware! Payton is back and recharged to equal his 2002 Defensive Player of the Year performance. He was in the offence's backfield all night. Although he did not have a sack, he forced the quarterback either to hurry his passes or scramble for his life. Payton closed holes on runs, spun out of backs to make tackles, or penetrated and stripped the ball from the ball carrier.
1st Runner Up: Uzooma Okeke #53, Montreal Alouettes
2nd Runner Up: Rashad Jeanty #3, Edmonton Eskimos
Judge: Bob Krouse
Special Teams Player of the Week
WR - Bashir Levingston #23
Toronto Argonauts
Highlights
Levingston returned only three (3) punts, his last one was for 72 yards and a touchdown.
Game Notes:
Levingston was held at bay last week against the Alouettes. This week, even though only touching the ball three times, he had extra spark in each step and could not be contained - catching the ball, giving ground, turning the corner and running untouched down the sideline for a touchdown.
1st Runner Up: Jason Armstead #88, Ottawa Renegades
2nd Runner Up: Mike Bradley #22, Edmonton Eskimos
Judge: Bob Krouse
