Beloit Sky Carp News Release

BELOIT, WI - Nick Rickles cranked out five hits, including a home run, and the Beloit Snappers knocked off the Quad Cities River Bandits, 8-6, with 2,065 in the stands on Saturday night in Midwest League action at Pohlman Field.

Beloit snaps a two-game skid and increases their mark to 63-41 (20-14 in the second half). Quad Cities falls to 56-46 (18-15 in the second half).

The early lead went to the River Bandits as they put up a pair in the first beginning with Carlos Correa's (2-4, 2 RBIs, run) RBI double. Rio Ruiz (2-4, HR, 3 RBIs, run) later pushed Correa across with a single for a quick 2-0 lead.

The Snappers answered back, tying the game with single runs in the third and fourth. The first run came in on a fielder's choice as John Wooten (3-5, 2 RBIs, run) beat out the throw to first, allowing Aaron Shipman (3-5, RBI, 2 runs) to come home. A solo job by Nick Rickles (5-5, HR, 2 RBIs, run) one inning later, his seventh evened the score.

After a scoreless fifth, Rio Ruiz restored the River Bandits two-run advantage by taking Kris Hall (4-1) for his seventh four-bagger of 2013.

That lead would not last very long, as the bottom of the sixth is when the Snappers went off on Juri Perez (0-2) for five runs. A single, a fielder's choice and a double put two men in scoring position and Christopher Bostick began the inning's scoring with a sacrifice fly. After Renato Nunez tied the game with an RBI single, consecutive RBI doubles by Matt Olson and Wooten made the score 6-4. Rickles capped the rally with a single to bring across Olson. Rickles five hit night is a season high for a Snappers player this season. "I've been seeing the ball well," said Rickles. "We tried to take the effort level down a bit just to see pitches better, and the results show that it paid off. I looked off a lot of pitches tonight, and seeing the ball better definitely is one of my goals for the rest of the season."

In the seventh, run-scoring singles by Jordan Scott and Correa slashed Beloit's lead to just a run, but Quad Cities couldn't complete the comeback. Shipman purchased insurance for the Snappers by singling to right to plate Brett Vertigan. "I felt pretty good [tonight]," said Shipman. "I was seeing [the ball] real well. I felt like I took some pretty good swings. [It was] a real good night for me tonight."

Tyler Vail stifled the River Bandits by not allowing a run in the eighth or the ninth. For his efforts, Vail was rewarded with his third save.

Beloit teed off on Quad Cities on this night, totaling a season-high nineteen hits. Every batter picked up at least one safety. "There's nothing like seeing everybody in the box score with a knock," said Shipman. "Nobody is in a bad mood. You got some momentum for the next day too, so there's nothing like it."

Beloit will try to make it two-for-two in this series on Sunday as RHP Deyvi Jimenez (2-0, 5.06 ERA) takes on LHP Joe Bircher (1-1, 3.98 ERA). The game has a start time of 2:00pm.
