Chiefs Win 4-1 Saturday

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs scored three runs in the first inning and beat the rival Kane County Cougars 4-1 on Saturday night. The win moved the Chiefs to 56-45 on the year and 18-16 in the second half while Kane County falls to 9-24 on the half and 39-60 overall.

The Cougars grabbed the early lead with a run in the first inning off Silfredo Garcia. With two outs Dan Vogelbach homered to right field, putting the Cougars up 1-0 with his 15th long ball of the season.

The Chiefs came back with three runs in the bottom of the first inning to grab the lead against Tayler Scott. C.J. McElroy led off with a double to right field, and moved to third on a Charlie Tilson bunt single. Breyic Valera drove a base-knock to center to plate McElroy, and Jacob Wilson doubled to left to score Tilson and Valera, giving the Chiefs the 3-1 lead with his team-leading 69th and 70th RBI. Patrick Wisdom walked to put two aboard before Jeremy Schaffer grounded into a 5-3 double play as Wilson was tagged out advancing to third. After Nick Martini walked, Ildemaro Vargas grounded out, stranding two on base.

Peoria added to their lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Martini hit an infield single to lead off, and advanced to second on a Vargas ground out. With two outs and Martini at third, McElroy drove in Martini on a two-out single to put the Chiefs up 4-1.

After giving up the homer in the first Garcia retired the bare minimum until the sixth inning. Former Chief Reggie Golden singled to lead off the frame and Oliver Zapata bunted him to second. Golden moved to third on a Gioskar Amaya ground out, but was stranded there after Garcia forced Dan Vogelbach to ground out to second, ending the threat and preserving the Chiefs 4-1 advantage.

Garcia (3-3) earned the win pitching six innings and giving up one run on four hits and one walk while fanning four. Sam Tuivailala tossed two shutout innings, giving up no hits and one walk while striking out five. Zach Russell tossed a scoreless ninth, allowing one hit and earning his fifth save.
