Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (12-22, 44-59) plated a run in each of the first four innings to take the series opener against the Bowling Green Hot Rods (23-12, 61-42), 4-1, on Saturday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.
The win was the Lugnuts' third in 13 attempts against Bowling Green this season.
Christian Lopes delivered an RBI single in the first, Jorge Flores contributed with an RBI double in the second, Santiago Nessy added an RBI double of his own in the third, and the scoring was capped with a solo home run by Kellen Sweeney in the fourth inning - all against Bowling Green right hander Jeff Ames (Loss, 7-3).
Ames was on an 11-inning hitless streak against the Lugnuts, having won all three prior starts against Lansing this season, but the Lugs were able to turn the table on him. The right-hander surrendered four runs - all earned - in 5.2 innings on the mound. He issued a pair of walks while striking out two hitters in the loss.
Javier Avenda̮̱o (Win, 7-6) pitched 5.1 strong frames for Lansing, recovering from two poor starts against Bowling Green earlier in the season. The 22-year old Venezuelan surrendered just one earned run on two hits. Despite five walks, he earned the win, also striking out five.
The only run of the game for Bowling Green came on Joey Rickard's RBI single in the top of the sixth inning.
Efrain Nieves pitched 2.2 scoreless innings out of the pen for Lansing in setting up Arik Sikula, who struck out the side in the ninth inning to earn his 15th save of the season.
Game two of the three-game series will be played Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. on a Kid's Day. Families can play catch on the field before the game and kids can run the bases following the game. Lansing will hand the ball to right-hander Taylor Cole (5-9, 3.95) while the Hot Rods will counter with southpaw Jordan Harrison (1-2, 3.42).
