TODAY: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Erie SeaWovles will meet in the finale of a three-game series...The Flying Squirrels rallied from a three-run deficit backed by Thomas Neal's three home runs to knock off the SeaWolves 6-3 in 11 innings on Saturday night at Jerry Uht Park.
TODAY'S STARTERS: Right-hander Mike MacDonald gets the start in the finale of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Earned the win in his last start at Akron 6/22...Allowed just one run on three hits in 7 1/3 innings...Struck out five batters and walked one...Lone run allowed came on a Carlos Rivero leadoff home run in the bottom of the eighth inning...Recorded 13 ground outs and three fly outs...Threw 98 pitches, 60 strikes...Retired the leadoff batter in six of his eight innings on the mound...Outing was his longest on the season...Fifth quality start of the season and his first since 5/31 against Bowie...Won for the first time since 4/30 against Bowie (seven starts)...Win was just the second for the club with MacDonald on the mound (2-12)...Six runs of support including four runs in the first inning was a season-high for MacDonald...Previous high was four 6/5 at Trenton...Averaging 1.79 runs of support during his appearances...Left-handed batters are hitting .415 (44-for-106) against him...Is 1-4 with a 5.68 ERA in eight starts on the road.
Right-hander Thad Weber gets the nod in game three of the series for the SeaWovles...Suffered the loss in his last start against Trenton 6/22...Allowed eight runs, six earned, on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings...Struck out six batters and walked three...Had given up just four runs, three earned, on 19 hits in 22 innings of work in his first three starts in June (1.23 ERA)...Has gone at least five innings in all 14 of his starts this season...Ranks third in the Eastern League with 89 2/3 innings pitched...Has allowed 99 hits (tied for most in
the Eastern League) in 89 2/3 innings...Suffered the loss in his lone appearance at Richmond 5/20 giving up four runs on five hits in 7 2/3 innings while walking three batters and striking out two...Only start where he walked more batters than he struck out...Went 7-3 with a 4.06 ERA in 13 starts with Erie in 2009 including throwing a nine-inning no-hitter against Akron on 8/22/09, striking out 10 batters...Only two base runners to reach against him came on a hit batter and an error...Began 2009 with Advanced-A Lakeland and went 4-4 with a 2.13 ERA in 12 starts...Named a Florida State League Mid-Season All-Star...Selected in the 16th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft...Attended the University of Nebraska.
SWEEP DREAMS?: The Flying Squirrels are seeking their fourth series sweep of the season with a win today...The club has not swept a series since sweeping Bowie 4/30-5/2...Richmond's other two sweeps have come against New Britain (4/19-4/21, 4/26-4/28)...The Flying Squirrels have been swept three times.
GOOD DAY?: Richmond is 8-8 in day games this season...Six of the club's eight wins during day games have come in contests starting before noon...The Flying Squirrels are 2-8 in games starting after noon.
EXTRA SPECIAL: Richmond won for the second time in extra innings with last night's 6-3, 11-inning victory...The club is 2-3 in extra frames...It was also just the second time that the Flying Squirrels won when trailing after five innings...The club improved to 2-28 when trailing after five...The only other time was 4/28 at New Britain when Richmond scored three runs in the ninth inning to win 5-3.
THOMAS THE TRAIN: Outfielder Thomas Neal set a career-high with three home runs and matched a career-best with five RBI last night...It was the fourth multi-homer game in Neal's career...All seven of his home runs have come on road...He set team season-highs for most homers and total bases (12) in a single game and matched season highs for runs scored (3), extra-base hits (3), and RBI (5)...It was also his team-leading 22nd multi-hit game of the season and just his fourth game with three of more hits...The 22-year-old leads the team with 40...Neal is sixth in the Eastern League with 78 hits...He was just 1-for-13 over his previous five games after sitting out the series-opener against Altoona 6/18.
GETTING SERIE-OUS: Richmond improved to 2-9-2 over its last 13 series (5/13-6/27) with last night's series-clinching win...The only other series win for the Flying Squirrels over that stretch came against New Britain 6/8-6/10 when the club took two of three games...Prior to the skid, Richmond had gone 6-1-1 over its previous eight series spanning from 4/15-5/2.
PEN-NY SAVERS: Flying Squirrels starters have gone six innings or more in each of the last nine contests...The longest streak of six innings or more from the starting pitchers had been three games 6/8-6/10...Over the last nine games, Flying Squirrels' starters have allowed 24 runs, 19 earned, on 57 hits in 59 1/3 innings while striking 30 and walking 16 (2.88 ERA)...Starters are 3-4 over the last nine games.
HITTER BY DESIGNATION: The Flying Squirrels are hitting .255 (282-for-1107) with the designated hitter in the line up...The club is batting .239 (328-for-1374) with the pitcher batting...Richmond DHs are batting just .197 (24-for-122) on the season; however, the DHs are just 4-for-66 over the last 18 games against American League affiliates (since 5/18)...The Flying Squirrel DHs were hitting .357 (20-for-56) over their first 16 games...Richmond pitchers are hitting just .130 (12-for-92) at the plate with 52 strikeouts...The Flying Squirrels are 20-14 against American League affiliates and will face an AL affiliate over the next eight games counting today.
DOUBLETREE DOWNTOWN DOUBLE PLAYS: The Richmond Flying Squirrels have turned 99 double plays in 75 games including six on 5/7 in Harrisburg...The club leads the Eastern League in double plays turned and has not gone more than two games without turning a double play.
CFS STAT OF THE NIGHT: Richmond improved to 12-1 when a starting pitcher goes seven innings or more...It was just the fourth time a pitcher other than Daryl Maday or David Mixon went seven innings or more.
