Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Altoona rebounded from two straight losses in a big way Sunday night, using 16 hits and 12 runs to defeat the Baysox, 12-3, in the series finale. Josh Harrison went 4-for-5 with four doubles in the game, which set a new franchise record for doubles in a game by one player. The previous record of three had been accomplished many times but most recently by Jonel Pacheco on August 27, 2009 vs. Trenton.
After Bowie plated two runs in the top of the first off starter Rudy Owens (7-3) thanks to two Curve errors, Altoona benefited from three defensive hiccups by the Baysox in the bottom of the inning. Chase d'Arnaud reached on an error by third baseman Tyler Henson to start the inning and Gorkys Hernandez singled to place runners at first and second with no one out.
With Harrison at the plate, d'Arnaud broke for third and stole the bag clean but the throw from catcher Steve Lerud went into left field and d'Arnaud popped back up to advance home to cut the deficit to one. Hernandez, who also stole second on the same play, moved to third with the error by Lerud. Harrison and Matt Hague both struck out but Jordy Mercer reached on the second error of the inning by Henson, which also allowed Hernandez to score to tie the game at two.
Hector Gimenez singled and Shelby Ford followed with an RBI double to bring the go-ahead run in and place the Curve in front, 3-2.
Altoona never looked back, plating three more runs in the bottom of the second thanks to Mercer's three-run home run which was made possible by the fourth error of the game by Bowie.
Owens, after the long first, settled in to retire nine in a row from the second into the fifth. Bowie scored a run off Owens in the fifth but that is the last run the Baysox would get. The Mesa, Ariz. native finished five innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Derek Hankins finished the game for the Curve, pitching the final four innings for his second save of the year.
The Curve eventually added six more runs in the late innings with one run coming across in the seventh and five more in the eighth when the Curve sent 10 men to the plate.
Mercer finished the game with 3-for-5 with a career high four RBI while Hernandez, Hague and Anthony Norman each had two hits. Harrison's four hits in the game also tied a personal career high for the Cincinnati, Ohio native.
With a 4-2 homestand under its belt, Altoona (49-26) travels to Binghamton to take on the B-Mets (39-36) on Monday at 6:35 p.m. at NYSEG Stadium. RHP Bryan Morris (4-2, 3.72) will make the start for Altoona while RHP Josh Stinson (4-1, 2.59) starts for the Mets.
Radio coverage begins at 6:05 p.m. on flagship ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network.
