TODAY'S GAME: The second of a four game series and game six of an eight game homestand (the Braves are 2-3 on the homestand). The second of eight meetings and the second of four here. The Braves were 5-3 vs. Syracuse last year, 3-1 at The Diamond. Richmond is in a stretch of 36 straight games vs. North Division clubs that runs through June 27. The Braves are 9-19 vs. the North, 5-7 at home. Richmond is third in the South, 12.5 games out of first. The SkyChiefs are fifth in the North, 11 games out of first. The Braves are 333-298 all-time vs. the SkyChiefs . The Braves have lost 12 of their last 15 games.
LAST NIGHT'S GAME: The SkyChiefs beat the Braves 4-3 Saturday night at The Diamond. The Chiefs scored two runs in the ninth to earn the win after trailing at one point 3-0. The Braves scored first on a fourth inning Tony Pena sacrifice fly. Pena knocked in a run in the sixth with a single to make it 2-0. James Jurries drove in a run with a base hit in the seventh to give the Braves a 3-0 advantage. The Cheifs, blanked for six innings by Braves starter Zach Miner, roughed up the Braves bullpen for two runs in the eighth on a pinch-hit single by Jason Alfaro. In the ninth Chad Mottola doubled two home with one out to put the Chiefs ahead to stay. Jurries, Bill McCarthy, and Esix Snead had two hits each. Julius Matos and Bryant Nelson had two hits each for Syracuse. The two clubs stranded a combined 26 runners. Matt Duff picked up the win. Former R-Brave Matt Whiteside earned the save. Chris Mears took the loss. All 10 Braves hits were singles.
HOT STARTERS: Braves starters have pitched 12 straight scoreless innings. Over the last five games Braves starters have an ERA of 2.89. Daniel Curtis, Seth Greisinger, and Zach Miner have combined to allow just five earned runs in 30.1 innings (1.49) in their last two turns. Over that span the Braves have a record of 3-9, they are 2-4 in those six starts.
NUMBER CRUNCHING: Scott Pratt has hits in four straight games (4-for-16 .250). Esix Snead is second in the IL in stolen bases. The Braves are last in the International League in batting average, runs scored and walks issued. The Braves have allowed 15 home runs in the last eight games. John Barnes is 4-for-10 with three walks since returning from Double-A. Richmond has been shut out six times in their last 15 games and seven times in 23 games. Richmond hit 39 home runs in their first 39 games. The Braves have hit eight in their last 24 games. Snead snapped out of an 0-15 slide with two hits last night. Andy Barkett is 1 for his last 16. Bill McCarthy snapped a 2-for18 slump with two hits last night. Jeremy Ward has worked three straight scoreless outings over 5.1 innings. Macay McBride has allowed just one run in his last eight innings. McBride has struck out six and walked just one over that span. Seth Greisinger has worked 14 straight scoreless innings. Greisinger is now sixth in the IL in ERA. Andy Marte picked up his first major league hit last night. Five 2005 R-Braves are currently with Atlanta (Marte, Kyle Davies, Kelly Johnson, Brayan Pena, and John Foster). The Braves have lost 160 man-games to the Disabled List this season. Richmond has made 54 roster moves in 2005.
RUNS TOUGH TO COME BY: The Braves have been held to three runs or less in four straight games, six of the last seven, and 11 of their last 15. The Braves are hitting .220 over the last 10 games, and .216 in the last five. Richmond is hitting just .229 with runners in scoring position. Braves opponents are hitting .261 with runners in scoring position. The Braves are 13th in the International League in hitting with runners in scoring position, ahead of only Charlotte (.227).
