
Munson's five-five, two homerun night sparks Bulls victory

Durham, NC -Bulls first baseman Eric Munson's 5-for-5, two home run night sparked a 13-9 Bulls victory over the Scranton Wilkes-Barre Red Barons on Sunday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Durham improves to 30-35 on the season while Scranton Wilkes-Barre falls to 26-35. The win was the team's third in as many nights, the first time the Bulls have won three straight since May 21st.
Durham jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Munson drove in his first run of the night, scoring shortstop B.J. Upton with a single to right field. Scranton Wilkes-Barre answered in the top of the second, scoring six runs on five hits to take a 6-1 lead. The Bulls cut the Red Barons' lead to four scoring one run in the bottom of the second on a Kevin Cash RBI-single to make the score 6-2. After Scranton Wilkes-Barre scored a run in the third to take a 7-2 lead, Munson hit his 12th home run of the season and Cash hit a three-run home run over the "Blue Monster" in left field in the bottom half of the inning to bring the Bulls within a run.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Munson led off the inning with a double to right field. Snyder followed with a sacrifice fly to center, advancing Munson to third base. Munson scored on the next at-bat when LaForest doubled to right to tie the game at 7-7. With two outs in the fifth, Bulls left fielder Jeff Deardorff drew a walk, giving Durham runners at first and second. Center fielder Michael Curry followed with an RBI-single up the middle scoring LaForest from second base and giving the Bulls an 8-7 lead. Deardorff scored the third run of the inning on a Fernando Cortez RBI-single as Durham pulled ahead 9-7.
Durham took a 10-7 lead in the bottom of the sixth when Munson drove in Jonny Gomes, who had doubled in the previous at-bat. Scranton Wilkes-Barre made it a one-run game by scoring two runs in the top of the eighth, but Durham added three insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning to preserve the win. Munson started the inning by hitting his second homer of the game and 13th of the year on a solo blast to right, then Snyder doubled to left field on the next at-bat before advancing to third on a Cash single. Snyder scored on a fielding error by Red Barons third baseman Chris Coste to give the Bulls a 12-9 advantage. Cash later scored on a wild pitch by Terry Adams, giving the Bulls a 13-9 lead.
Bulls relief pitcher Joe Nelson shut the door on the Red Barons in the ninth, picking up his fourth save of the season, allowing no runs and no hits in the final frame. Durham starter Jason Roach (4-5) picked up his fourth win of the season allowing seven runs on eight hits in 7.0 innings of work.
