Charlotte Knights News Release
For the second consecutive day, the Charlotte Knights and Norfolk Tides battled back and forth, but a late game rally from the Tides led to a 10-4 Norfolk victory at Knights Stadium Sunday afternoon. A two RBI double from Joe Borchard tied the game in the fifth, but the Tides scored five runs in the final two innings to secure the win.
Dennis Ulacia threw five innings for the Knights, allowing four runs on seven hits, but it was Dave Sanders who picked up the loss out of the bullpen after giving up three runs on two hits in 2 1/3 innings. Borchard led the Knights' offense, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBIs.
Norfolk scored the first two runs of the game in the second. An RBI single from Rodney Nye drove in Gerald Williams, who led off the inning with a double. Two batters later, the sacrifice fly from Chris Basak scored Williams to put the Tides ahead 2-0.
For the second consecutive game, Joe Borchard sailed a solo home run over the left field wall to put the Knights on the scoreboard in the second.
The Tides got their bats swinging in the top of the third with solo home runs from Jeff Keppinger and former Knight Brian Daubach.
Charlotte got a run back in the bottom of the inning as Jorge Toca extended his hitting streak to twelve games. With runners on the corners, Toca drove in Greg Norton, who had singled, with a single of his own up the middle narrowing the gap 4-2.
Roosevelt Brown led off the fifth inning with a double, and Brian Anderson's single in the next at-bat put runners on second and third. For his second hit of the game, Borchard slapped a double off the left field wall to send both runners across the plate and tie the score at four.
In the top of the sixth, Dave Sanders entered the game and allowed a solo home run to Chris Basak, putting the Tides back on top 5-4.
Norfolk scored two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth against relievers Sanders, Jeff Bajenaru and Kevin Walker to secure the lead. Basak's second hit, a two-RBI single in the eighth, put Norfolk ahead 7-4 as Gerald Williams and Rodney Nye, who reached on back-to-back walks to lead off the inning, scored.
A three-run home run from Williams in the ninth off Walker gave Tides' reliever Blake McGinley a comfortable margin entering the bottom of the ninth, but he had a little trouble working out of the inning.
The first two batters Pedro Lopez and Felix Martinez popped out, but McGinley dealt walks to the next two Knights, Norton and Brown. Anderson's ground out to the catcher ended the game.
The Knights have an off day on Monday and will travel to Norfolk for a two-game series on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Syracuse Sky Chiefs will make their first visit of the season to Knights Stadium for a four-game series beginning on Thursday.
Notes:
Jorge Toca extends his hitting streak to twelve games, 1-4
