Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (June 12, 2012) -- Bill Rice grounded a one-out single up the middle to drive home the winning run from second base as the Kannapolis Intimidators (30-35) defeated the Greensboro Grasshoppers (42-22) on Tuesday night, 2-1 in seven innings, at CMC- NorthEast Stadium. The Grasshoppers won Monday's suspended game, 16-5, earlier in the day.
Martin Medina led off the bottom of the seventh inning reaching base hit by a pitch and moved to second on a David Herbek sac-bunt. Two batters later, Rice provided the game-winning hit, evening the series at one game a piece.
Intimidators starter Erik Johnson spun five scoreless frames, allowing four hits while striking out five in his third start of the season. Johnson, the White Sox second round pick in the June 2011 draft, took no decision.
Kannapolis struck first in the second inning when Mark Haddow led off with a double to right field and moved to third base when right fielder James Wooster bobbled the ball. Grant Bucker grounded out to bring home Haddow for a 1-0 lead.
Greensboro got on the board against Bryan Blough in the top of the sixth. James Wooster led off the inning with a single, and moved to second on a Bryan Blough fielding error. After a Brent Keys sac-bunt moved Wooster to third, Josh Adams lifted a sacrifice fly to left bring, cashing Wooster and tying the game, 1-1.
Blough (2-3) responded by striking out the next batter and working a 1-2-3 seventh inning to earn the win.
Grasshoppers starter Josh Hodges (4-4) suffered a complete-game loss, allowing two runs on four hits with three walks a two strikeouts.
The Intimidators wrap up their final home series of the first half with the series finale against the Grasshoppers Wednesday before embarking on a four-game road trip to Delmarva. The Intimidators return from the All-Star Break on Thursday, June 21, with an eight- game home stand against Delmarva and Hickory.
