Revs Miss Late Opportunities As Skeeters Take Opener

June 4, 2013 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

The York Revolution stranded runners in scoring position in each of the final four innings, dropping their opener to the Sugar Land Skeeters 5-4 on Tuesday evening at Sovereign Bank Stadium. The Revs have now lost back-to-back one-run games after winning six straight, and will look to get back on track on Wednesday with two games remaining on the current homestand.

York scored in each of the first three innings, holding an early lead. Brian Burgamy launched a solo home run to right-center in the bottom of the first for the game's first run. Sugar Land then plated two runs in the second on an RBI double by Michael Rockett and a two-out RBI single from Adam Godwin, but the Revs answered back as Cody Johnson led off the home second with a double and scored on a Ruddy Yan single, and Eric Patterson led off the third with a triple to right and scored on an Andres Perez groundout, giving York a 3-2 lead.

Revs starter Pedro Liriano allowed just two runs in four innings of work, but Sugar Land scored three times with two outs in the fifth to take the lead for good. Godwin led off the inning with an infield single, and after advancing to third base, watched as Jason Lane and Aaron Bates both walked with two outs against reliever Yunior Novoa (3-1). Joe Torres entered to face Koby Clemens and uncorked a wild pitch allowing Godwin to score the tying run, before Clemens ripped a two-run single to left-center, handing the Skeeters a 5-3 lead. Sugar Land did not manage a hit the rest of the night, but made those runs stand up.

Skeeters starter Matt Wright (6-0) went five innings to earn the win, now tied for the league lead with six victories.

Andy Marte led off the bottom of the sixth with a double against Dustin Richardson but was stranded at third. The Revs then had runners at second and third with no outs in the seventh as Salvador Paniagua (seven-game hitting streak) and Manny Mayorson both led off with singles and advanced on a wild pitch, but the Revs would leave the bases loaded, and strand two more in the eighth.

Closer Jason Bergmann allowed his first run in 19 appearances in the bottom of the ninth on a home run to left-center by Perez. Burgamy then followed with a double off the top of the right field fence, missing a game-tying homer by mere feet. Bergmann came back to record the final two outs, tying for the league lead with his 13th save.

Notes: The Revs have had a runner at third base with less than two outs and have failed to score four times over the last two games. Of York's 21 losses, 17 have been decided by three runs or fewer, including 13 one-run defeats. York is now 0-4 against Sugar Land this season. The Revs will send Corey Thurman (3-5, 4.93) to the mound on Wednesday against Scott Elarton (3-3, 3.76). It is a Boomer's Book Club Redemption Night. Tickets are available at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
