New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Revolution midfielder Khano Smith was chosen by Seattle Sounders FC with one of its 10 selections in the 2008 MLS Expansion Draft, which took place on Wednesday. Smith just completed his fourth MLS season, all with New England.
The Revolution also announced that the team has waived goalkeeper Doug Warren and forward Jose Angulo.
Smith, 27 and an international player from Bermuda, was originally signed by the Revolution on April 15, 2005, after a stand-out performance against the Revs in a preseason exhibition match. He made 85 appearances with 54 starts for the Revolution, scoring eight goals and 11 assists in regular-season action.
Smith also made 10 postseason appearances with four starts, and was a member of the New England team that played in the MLS Cup championship match in three straight seasons (2005-07). He scored the series-winning goal against New York in the 2005 Eastern Conference Semifinal Series, capping the Revolution's comeback from a two-goal deficit, and also assisted on Taylor Twellman's go-ahead goal in overtime at MLS Cup 2006. He was suspended for both of the Revs' 2008 playoff games.
MLS held its 2008 Expansion Draft on Wednesday for the League's 15th team, Seattle Sounder FC, allowing the team to begin constructing its roster for the 2009 season. Seattle selected one player each from 10 of the 14 MLS teams.
Chivas USA, the Colorado Rapids, D.C. United, and FC Dallas were the four teams that did not have a player selected in the draft. Each of the 14 teams was allowed to protect 11 players, leaving all others unprotected and available for selection by the Sounders.
Below is the complete list of players selected in the 2008 MLS Expansion Draft:
- Brad Evans (Columbus Crew)
- Nate Jaqua (Houston Dynamo)
- Stephen King (Chicago Fire)
- Jeff Parke (New York Red Bulls)
- James Riley (San Jose Earthquakes)
- Khano Smith (New England Revolution)
- Jarrod Smith (Toronto FC)
- Nathan Sturgis (Real Salt Lake)
- Peter Vagenas (Los Angeles Galaxy)
- Tyson Wahl (Kansas City Wizards)
Seattle Sounders FC, Major League Soccer's 15th team, will begin play in the Western Conference in 2009 and play its home games at Qwest Field in downtown Seattle.
Warren, 27, spent the last four seasons with the Revolution as the back-up goalkeeper to Matt Reis. Warren made three MLS appearances in 2008, his only games since joining the Revolution. On Aug. 16, he entered the Revs' match at San Jose in place of the injured Reis, and then went on to start the next two matches, going 1-0-1. He also made seven starts in the 2008 MLS Reserve Division, posting a 1.54 goals against average and a 1-3-2 record with one shutout.
Angulo, 20, did not make an appearance with the Revolution after signing with MLS in the fall and being placed on the Revs' developmental roster.
