Revs Erupt for Six-Run Fourth, Securing Series Win in Bridgeport
August 16, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution completed a series win in Bridgeport with a 7-3 victory on Sunday evening at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The Revs take three of four in the series from the Bluefish who are tied for first in the Liberty Division. York pulls back within three games of first place in the Freedom Division. Both teams are now 20-16 in the second half. York's road trip continues to Southern Maryland for the first of a four-game series on Monday night.
Bridgeport scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning. Revs starter Rommie Lewis struck out the first two batters, but Welington Dotel reached on an error by second baseman Mikey Reynolds, stole second, and came home on a single to right by John Alonso.
York tied the game in the top of the second, doing so on an RBI single to right by Salvador Paniagua. It plated Andres Perez who had to hesitate leaving second to make sure the liner wasn't caught, and then scampered around the tag attempt of catcher Luis Rodriguez, diving to touch home plate with his hand, tying the game at 1-1.
The Revs erupted for six runs, batting around in the top of the fourth to take a commanding 7-1 lead. It all started as Telvin Nash worked a leadoff walk and Paniagua flared a broken bat single over first to put runners at the corners. Nash was cut down trying to score on a fielder's choice to second, but Jose Constanza battled back from behind in the count to draw a walk, loading the bases with one out. Wilson Valdez opened the floodgates, smashing a two-run ground-rule double down the left field line, giving York the lead. Eric Patterson then reached on a wild pitch on a swinging third strike, with Constanza sprinting home to score on the play. Brandon Boggs followed with a sac fly to left, and Perez launched a towering two-run homer to left, his team-leading 11th of the season to punctuate the outburst.
Bridgeport inched closer with a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single to left by Andres Rodriguez, but it was the only earned run allowed by Lewis (9-8) over five innings. The lefty gave up just three hits and three walks, and tied a season-high for a third time with seven strikeouts, winning for the fourth time in his last five decisions.
Bridgeport scored another run in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Luis Rodriguez, but the unearned run (advanced on a passed ball) was the only run allowed in three innings of relief by Ty'Relle Harris, who retired nine of his final ten batters including eight straight at one point, a season-best for a single appearance by a Revs reliever.
Stephen Penney closed it out with a scoreless ninth, retiring Ethan Chapman on a double play grounder to short to secure the series win.
Bluefish starter Ray Hanson (0-2) suffered the loss, charged with all seven runs on seven hits in five innings, while walking six. It marked the second straight day a Bluefish starter issued six walks.
York out-hit Bridgeport 8-6, led by Patterson's 3-for-5 day, coming within a homer of the cycle. Patterson had gone yard in his final at-bat in the previous contest on Saturday evening. Perez went 2-for-4 with his two-run homer, finishing the four-game series with 11 RBI, taking over the franchise lead on Friday (now with 220 in his Revs career), and the league-lead with 63 RBI on the season. Paniagua also went 2-for-3 and drove in a run.
Notes: The Revs have scored 78 runs over their last 12 games, averaging 6.5 per game. The Revs have belted 38 home runs in their last 35 games, and rank second in the league with 76 home runs as a team. York improves to 5-5 vs. Bridgeport on the season, finishing the season series 4-3 at Harbor Yard. Patterson's sixth inning triple was the 28th of his Revs career, moving into sole possession of eighth in Atlantic League history. Perez has 30 RBI in his last 21 games and has hit eight of his 11 home runs since July 14, while batting .439 over his last 16 games. York batters drew eight walks in the game while Revs pitchers combined to strike out 12 batters, both one short of tying season-highs for a single game. York's starter for Monday's opener has yet to be announced, while Southern Maryland will send righty Daryl Thompson (4-4, 3.68) to the mound. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., and Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile apps beginning at 6:45 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
