Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters earned a split in the series finale with the Lancaster Barnstormers with a 2-0 shutout at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Sunday. Starting pitcher Matt Wright snapped a five-game losing streak that saw his ERA over that stretch rise to 8.03. The win improves Sugar Land's record to 14-22 in the second half and 50-56 overall.
Wright turned in his best outing of the season in the win. The right-hander scattered three hits over 6.0 innings with eight strikeouts and no walks. The four-year member of the Skeeters improved his record to 6-7 with the dominating performance on the rubber.
The Skeeters jumped out to a quick 1-0 advantage in the top of the first to break the scoring seal. Jeff Dominguez legged out a double to open the inning and came in to score on a one-out, RBI single from Delwyn Young to put Sugar Land ahead.
Sugar Land was able to increase the lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth after Wright continued to put up zeroes on the mound. Dominguez reached on a single to start the frame and advanced up to second on a single from Young. Chris Wallace picked up his 61st-RBI of the season on his 23rd-double of the year, scoring Dominguez and bolstering the advantage to 2-0.
Andrew Johnston, Dan Runzler and Derrick Loop combined to keep the Barnstormers off the board to keep the shutout intact. Runzler and Loop each scattered a single. Loop earned his team-leading 12th-save of the season with a strikeout and a double play ball in the bottom of the ninth.
