York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution jumped out to an early lead and began the month of September with a 7-5 win over the Long Island Ducks, snapping their seven-game losing streak in front of a crowd of 4,620 at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Wednesday night in York. The homestand continues on Thursday night at 6:30 for Hatfield Dollar Dog Night, when the Newark Bears come to York for the first of four.
Down a run thanks to a Robinson Cancel first inning sac fly, the Revs quickly took control with two in the first and four more in the second against Long Island's all-time wins leader Randy Leek.
After Scott Grimes led off with a single and Liubiemithz Rodriguez reached on an infield hit, a passed ball moved both into scoring position. Steve Haake pinch-hit for Ramon Castro who was forced to leave with an apparent lower-body injury, and drove a sac fly to left to tie the game. Jose Herrera then extended his hitting streak to 18 consecutive games, the longest current streak in the league, with an RBI double to left-center, lifting York on top.
Erold Andrus ignited the big second inning with a double to left-center. John Pachot sacrificed him to third, and after a walk to Chuck Jeroloman, Grimes blooped an RBI single to right. Rodriguez then drove in two more on a triple to right-center, and Haake collected another sac fly on a line drive to center, upping the lead to 6-1.
Leek settled in to retire 12 of 13, beginning with Haake's sac fly, but the Revs rode the early runs and made the lead stand up.
York starter Jeremy Lewis was one out away from being through four innings with just one run allowed, but Bridger Hunt connected on his sixth career homerun and first of the season, a two-run shot to left-center, pulling Long Island within 6-3.
Matt DeSalvo (2-1) worked three innings in relief to earn the win, just two nights after hurling 101 pitches in a start. He struck out four, and surrendered only one run, on a homerun to right field by Matt Cavagnaro with two outs in the sixth. DeSalvo also fielded his position well, snagging a liner back to the mound off the bat of John Rodriguez, and making a diving stop on a groundball by Matt Esquivel to record an out.
Andrus smacked his sixth homerun of the season to right-center in the eighth, spotting York an insurance run and a 7-4 lead.
R.J. Rodriguez earned his sixth save in seven tries with the tying run on base in the ninth inning. After Hunt reached on an error, Joey Gathright singled, and Javier Colina beat out an infield single to produce a run, Rodriguez battled back to strike out Brendan Monaghan, and retire Cancel on a game-ending double play, with Haake fielding the ground ball, stepping on first, and throwing to Jeroloman at short who applied the tag on Colina.
Leek (11-7) suffered the loss, allowing six runs (all earned) on nine hits in six innings.
Notes: Cancel's 17-game hitting streak came to an end (0-for-1), but he was hit by a pitch and walked twice, extending his on-base streak to 36 consecutive games, the longest in the league all season. Grimes scored twice more, increasing his league-record runs total to 122 in just 114 games. Pachot (1-for-3) extended his hitting streak to 10 consecutive games, while Haake (1-2) extended his hitting streak to seven. gates open at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday night.
