Lancaster Stormers News Release

When Reggie Taylor tied the game in the bottom of the 8th inning, there was no way to know that he had just sparked a historic game at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

When the dust settled, Lancaster and Southern Maryland had battled for 16 innings, the longest game by innings ever played at home by the Barnstormers.

However, despite the historic nature, the Barnstormers were unable to come away with a win as Jamar Hill would hit his second home run of the game, a 2-run home run to right, in the top of the 16th inning to give the Blue Crabs a 7-5 win.

The lead changed several times early on in the game. The Blue Crabs jumped out first, scoring a run off an RBI single by Richard Giannotti in the top of the 2nd.. However, the Barnstormers responded quickly, as Octavio Martinez doubled home Reggie Taylor and Ryan Mulhern in the bottom half of the inning.

Southern Maryland would tie the game in the 4th inning, and then retook the lead in the 5th off a solo home run by Justin Armiger that hugged the left field line before reaching the hill in fair territory. Once again though, the Barnstormers would respond, tying the game on an RBI single by Vic Gutierrez.

Starter Ross Peeples, who was making a spot start for injured starter Ben Fritz, gave way to the bullpen after giving up three runs in five innings.

The Blue Crabs were able to get to reliever Charlie Weatherby in the 7th inning. Shaun Cumberland was able to give Southern Maryland a 4-3 lead with an RBI single, and then Jamar Hill hit his first home run of the game, a bomb to left center that reached the top of the hill to put them ahead 5-3.

It looked bleak as the game entered the bottom of the 8th. Aaron Herr then led the inning off with a walk. Reggie Taylor launched one to right center for a 2-run home run, his 20th of the season, and tied the game at 5.

The bullpen for both sides completely took over at that point. Once the game hit extra innings, Sean Thompson came in for the Barnstormers and shut down the Blue Crabs for five innings. Thompson struck out four while only giving up four hits in those five innings. His counterpart who came in during the 10th, Chris Hayes, pitched just as well, pitching six innings without giving up a run.

The Barnstormers threatened several times against Hayes, getting a runner in scoring position in the 12th, 13th and 15th innings, but couldn't push the run across. After Pat Overholt pitched a scoreless 15th inning for the Barnstormers, Austin Hinkle came in, and despite recording two outs and almost got out of the inning, Jamar Hill was able to hit a 2-run home run that just cleared the right field fence. Bryan Dumesnil would come in and pitch a perfect ninth for his first save of the season. Hayes would get the win to improve to 2-0, while Hinkle fell to 0-2 on the year.

The game broke a previous Clipper Magazine Stadium record of 15 innings for the longest game. The Barnstormers and Blue Crabs play the rubber game of the series Wednesday night at 6:30 at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Jason Simontacchi is scheduled to pitch for Lancaster while Craig Anderson takes the mound for Southern Maryland.
