Revolution Keep That Winning Habit

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - New England did not need any additional complications on this midweek trip to central New York. In the spirit of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, they arrived during the second half anyways.

The visitors did most of the hard work in this 5-1 third-round victory over USL Pro side Rochester Rhinos before the lightning and the rain forced referee Robert Sibiga to clear the field in the 53rd minute. They scored twice - including an early goal from Kelyn Rowe and a vital strike from Andy Dorman just moments before the stoppage - before entering the locker room for a 52-minute delay.

Rowe said the unexpected break threw a tricky hurdle in the Revs' path as they worked their way toward a fourth-round date against New York or Reading United A.C. at Harvard Univ. on June 12.

"It was a good team win and it was definitely a mental challenge for us," Rowe told MLSsoccer.com. "Those 30 minutes in the locker room, you had to cool back down and then warm back up - or keep yourself warm, whatever you preferred. It's a mental challenge."

Revolution coach Jay Heaps noted the difficulty of the situation - he said he suffered through a similar delay during career - and placed particular emphasis on how his players treated their bodies during the waiting period.

Heaps needed his players to persevere because he had used all of his substitutions before the electrical storm halted play at Sahlen's Stadium. He trusted his players and his staffers to ensure they could find a way to navigate through the remainder of the match without serious incident.

"We had to be really professional with how we warmed up - that's why we have (strength and conditioning coach) Nick Downing, to get them going," Heaps said. "(Andy) Dorman pulled up with a cramp. That was it."

The tidy work during the break yielded benefits on the field. Jerry Bengtson essentially booked a spot in the next round by snatching the third a minute after play resumed. Rowe and Chad Barrett scored either side of a Kendell McFayden tally to ensure the delay did not sidetrack the Revs from their quest or their recent uptick in form.

"Winning's a habit," Rowe said after his side claimed a third straight victory in all competitions. "We're going to keep it as long as we can."

Youth Update:

All three of the Revolution Academy's youth teams were in action last weekend, with each squad playing multiple games to go a combined 1-2-1 in U.S. Soccer Development Academy games and 1-0-3 at the Global Premier Soccer (GPS) College Showcase.

The Under-18s and Under-16s took on the Montreal Impact on Friday, May 24, at Regis College in Weston, Mass., earning a 3-1 victory and suffering a 3-0 loss, respectively. The teams then hosted Revolution Empire at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, May 26, when the U18s earned a 1-1 draw and the U16s suffered a 2-1 loss.

The Under-14s played a total of four games at the GPS College Showcase. Playing up an age group in the Under-15 Showcase, the U14s earned a win and two draws before bowing out of the semifinals in penalty kicks.

UNDER-18s

The Under-18s played Montreal Impact to a 1-1 draw on Friday, May 24. Ryan Rose (Acton, Mass.) drew a penalty kick in the 18th minute, which Leandro Alves (Pawtucket, R.I.) buried to give the Revs a 1-0 lead for much of the match. New England conceded a late goal, however, when Michael Bilak equalized for Montreal in the 84th minute.

On Sunday, May 26, the U18s earned a 3-1 victory against Revolution Empire behind goals from Matt Nyeayea (Worcester, Mass.), Peguy Ngatcha (Manchester, N.H.) and Dominik Machado (Attleboro, Mass.). Alves and Machado were each credited with assists in the game. In the 80th minute, Empire's Ethan Kutler netted a consolation goal, but the scoreboard read 3-1 at the final whistle, handing the Revs three points. Now 14-5-3 (45 pts.), the U18s are ranked third in the Northeast Division of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy's East Conference with 2.05 points per game and are in a strong position to claim their third Development Academy playoffs spot in four seasons (2010, 2012).

UNDER-16s

The Under-16s suffered a pair of losses this weekend: 2-1 to the Montreal Impact on Friday and 3-0 to Revolution Empire on Sunday. Wes Turner (Newton, Mass.) scored the Revs' lone goal on the weekend in the 55th minute against Montreal, assisted by Danny Apajee (Cranston, R.I.). With their 10-6-6 (36 pts.) record, the U16s are currently sixth in the Northeast Division of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy's East Conference with 1.64 points per game and are currently outside of the Development Academy playoff picture by one one-hundredth of a point per game with three games remaining.

UNDER-14s

The Under-14s played in the Under-15 bracket of the GPS College Showcase this weekend, going 1-0-3 overall and falling in penalty kicks in the semifinals to finish fourth overall. The U14s won their group with a 1-0-2 record (5 pts.) to advance to the semis, posting draws against SF Viking Bombers of Massachusetts (1-1) and Yonkers United Celtic of New York (0-0) on Saturday, before defeating Soccer Nova Scotia of Canada, 1-0, on Sunday. On Monday morning, the team drew with Bayside FC Bolts of Rhode Island, 1-1, before falling in penalties with a shot at the championship match on the line. The Under-14s currently hold a U.S. Club Soccer record of 13-3-1 (40 pts.) and with 2.35 points per game, sit in second place in U.S. Club Soccer's 20-team Northeast Pre-Academy League.

All three youth teams are in action next weekend, when they will host BW Gottschee at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., on Saturday, June 1. While the Under-18s and Under-16s still have two additional matches remaining following the BW Gottschee matches, next weekend will be the close of the Under-14's 2012-13 schedule.
