HARRISON, NJ (May 29, 2013) - Second half goals from Fabian Espindola and Lloyd Sam helped the New York Red Bulls defeat PDL side Reading United AC, 2-0, in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Wednesday evening at Red Bull Arena.
Red Bulls goalkeeper Ryan Meara played his first senior team match of the year and earned the shutout, as New York advanced to the fourth round, where it will face MLS foe, the New England Revolution, June 12 at Harvard University at 7:30 PM ET.
New York put pressure on the visitors early. Sam tested John McCarthy in the fifth minute with a shot that the Reading goalkeeper had to fully extend to push away. Ten minutes later, McCarthy denied Connor Lade and Amando Moreno on back-to-back attempts in the box.
On the other end, Mario Pinto ran at the defense and his attempt went wide right of goal. Wes Charpie also was close, curling his deflected blast off the mark in the 37th minute. New York nearly made it 1-0 right before the half when Michael Bustamante's one-timer was off frame after good build-up by the hosts. Sam had a similar attempt that rolled just past the left post.
In the second half, the Red Bulls kept looking for the first goal and substitutes Dax McCarty and Espindola combined in the penalty box, with the Argentine chipping it at McCarthy eight minutes in.
The Red Bulls took the lead through Espindola in the 61st minute. Solid attacking play led to Sam stringing it through to McCarty, who crossed it towards the back post. Espindola was there to knock it home from close range.
Sam doubled New York's advantage six minutes later. The Red Bulls midfielder played a give-and-go with Espindola and Sam found space alone in the right side of the box, chipping it over a diving McCarthy.
The Red Bulls finish a regular season three-game homestand on Saturday, June 1 when they take on Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Red Bull Arena at 7:00 PM ET. Tickets are available by calling 1.877.RBSOCCER or logging onto www.newyorkredbulls.com.
