CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The New England Revolution (1-2-1, 4 pts.) fell to Charlotte FC (1-3-0, 3 pts.), 3-1, on Saturday night at Bank of America Stadium in the clubs' first-ever meeting. Carles Gil notched the lone goal for New England, his second of the season, on a penalty kick in the 54th minute.

Karol Świderski opened the scoring after connecting with an Alan Franco pass in the sixth minute. Świderski and Benjamin Bender scored the second-half goals for Charlotte.

Down 1-0 early in the second half, New England was awarded a penalty kick after Charlotte goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina fouled Matt Polster inside the penalty area, resulting in a yellow card for the keeper. Gil converted from the spot, his second penalty goal of the year to go with one assist in MLS play, to tie the game.

Homegrown Player Justin Rennicks (South Hamilton, Mass.) came off the bench for his first MLS appearance of the 2022 campaign. Rennicks joined Jozy Altidore up top, the latter making his first start for the club and sixth appearance in as many games across all competitions this season.

The Revolution head into a bye week during the international window, before returning to action on April 2 to host the New York Red Bulls at Gillette Stadium. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m on WSBK-TV38, myRITV, CoziTV, 98.5 The Sports Hub, and 1260 AM Nossa Radio.

Revolution Sporting Director & Head Coach Bruce Arena

On the explanation he received as to why the foul on Matt Polster in the 53rd minute was not a red card:

Arena: "I think the fourth official was trying to tell me that he wasn't going straight to goal. Obviously, he's going around the goalkeeper. It's a red card. I made a statement this week about the VAR in our league isn't efficient. I shouldn't have said that it's the worst in the world. Factually, that would not be correct. But it needs to be better. What is the point of having VAR if you can't review that play and say it should be a red card? I mean, is it because you're saying it would be double-jeopardy? You get the penalty kick as well as the sending off? I don't know what the explanation would be for that. So, I would say that was a big part of the game. I thought at 1-1 we had momentum, we continued to play well and then we foolishly conceded the second goal. That hurt us. I thought that in the second half we played well. We conceded two goals that were in all honesty foolish. So, you know, give them credit. We had some chances in the second half. They were smart. They were smart realizing they could foul Carles Gil any time they wanted and probably get away with it. They played a smart game, give them credit. We did not play a smart game. Our first goal we conceded was a poor effort on our part. And goals two and three, we made a lot of mistakes there. You can't concede three goals on the road and expect to win, so we deserved to lose."

On whether the last week was just a bad stretch or signs of a larger problem:

Arena: "We'll be ready to play next time around."

On the focus now turning the page to a bye week and New York Red Bulls on April 2:

Arena: "Well, we're going to have a few days off. Just get our team better, get a little healthier. We'll get some players back and obviously improve on both ends of the field. In all honesty, we can score more goals. We had a couple chances we could do a little bit better on tonight, for example. Defensively, we made too many mistakes. We'll strengthen our backline with the returns of [Henry] Kessler and [Andrew] Farrell, so that will help us as well. And then I think [Matt] Turner will be back in the near future as well."

Revolution Midfielder Emmanuel Boateng

On the challenges the team has faced over the last few weeks:

Boateng: "It's just a tough stretch. We just had a tough two weeks. For sure, they were better than us today. They played better and their fans gave them the energy. But we should've stepped up. We made a few mistakes that cost us goals and that was the difference in the game. So we have to step up."

On the upcoming international break and turning the page on the past few games:

Boateng: "I wouldn't say it's much looking forward to it. If you're going into a break on a win, that's the best feeling. Confidence is high throughout the break and in practice. I think pissed and ready for the next opportunity to get it right. I mean, we made a few mistakes that cost us and we're going to learn from it these next few weeks in training. I can see everybody's going to be battling and ready to show that we're better as a team."

On missing defenders Andrew Farrell and Henry Kessler and goalkeeper Matt Turner:

Boateng: "I mean, they're great players for sure. They're a big part of what we achieved last year, so we're missing them on the field for sure. But we have great guys that can step in. I thought we were better in moments in the game. There were a few times where, I think, in the first half they didn't have any chances besides the goal they scored. Then just giving up those two goals in the second half is tough. I know everybody steps up here. Last year we went through that with guys stepping up and taking advantage of the opportunities that were given. I expect a lot of guys to bounce back as well. We're missing [Andrew] Farrell, and [Henry] Kessler, and [Matt] Turner, but I think the group we have here is capable of doing it. We just have to step up and be ready when those guys come back."
