New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution (1-3-1, 4 pts.) lost to the New York Red Bulls (3-1-1, 10 pts.), 1-0, at Gillette Stadium on Saturday night. The lone goal in Saturday's contest came via an own goal, with the visiting Red Bulls on the receiving end of a deflection as Andrew Farrell's clearance ricocheted off of Matt Polster into the New England net.
Brad Knighton, playing his club-record 12th season in New England, stopped all five Red Bull shots he faced in his season debut. Homegrown Player Justin Rennicks made his first MLS start since June 29, 2019, logging 61 minutes with two shots.
Andrew Farrell, playing on his 30th birthday, returned to the starting lineup for the first time since March 12. Tonight's appearance was his 302nd in a Revolution uniform across all competitions, second most in club history, as he put in a 90-minute effort on Saturday.
Adam Buksa returned from international duty to submit a 45-minute substitute appearance in place of Jozy Altidore, who made his second consecutive start. Buksa returned to the Revolution after helping Poland qualify for the 2022 FIFA Men's World Cup earlier this week.
The Revolution hit the road next Saturday, April 9, to visit Inter Miami CF for the first of two meetings with the Herons this month. The match at DRV PNK Stadium kicks off at 3:00 p.m. ET on ESPN, ESPN Deportes, 98.5 The Sports Hub, and 1260 AM Nossa Radio.

POSTGAME QUOTES: New England Revolution 0 vs. New York Red Bulls 1
Revolution Sporting Director & Head Coach Bruce Arena
On his reaction to tonight's loss:
Arena: "Well, I don't think we should've lost that game, but I'm not sure we deserved to win. But we certainly didn't deserve to lose the game. You know, what can you say? That's the sport of soccer, if you haven't seen any of these games before."
On whether he sees concerning trends from the team's recent losses:
Arena: "What do you mean by concerning trends? You mean, losing? Our guys played a good, hard game, a little bit unlucky to concede that goal at the end. You know, let's face it, that was a poorly officiated game. It was a bit of a factor. I'm not saying it determined the outcome, but it was a really awkward game. Give them credit. They came in here to disrupt us and foul us as much as they could and you know, take any kind of rhythm out of the game. And I think they accomplished that."
On Brad Knighton's performance:
Arena: "I think he did a good job. He made a couple of good saves there. I think they were pretty comfortable for him, but he did a really good solid job."
On Justin Rennicks' performance:
Arena: "[He] worked hard. You know, still a little inexperienced, but I think for the most part he gave us a good 60 minutes or so. I thought he did a good job."
On what he said to the referee before receiving a yellow card in tonight's match:
Arena: "I didn't say anything to the ref. Well, probably the fourth official said I was complaining about the sending off, I guess. I don't remember exactly."
On if the referees are responsive to him throughout the game:
Arena: "No. They can basically do anything they want and you know, it doesn't really matter, to be honest with you. They're well protected. The players and coaches aren't, but the referees are well protected."
On if the referees are responsive throughout the game:
Arena: "No. They can basically do anything they want and you know, it doesn't really matter, to be honest with you. They're well protected. The players and coaches aren't, but the referees are well protected."
On if the Revolution need another player like Carles Gil in the midfield:
Arena: "We're not getting another Carles Gil in the middle."
On the status of Gustavo Bou:
Arena: "He has an injury. He'll be back soon. I don't know exactly when, but he'll be back soon."
On his thoughts on the number of fouls committed by the Red Bulls tonight:
Arena: "That's the job of the referee, especially in the early parts of the game. He should make it clear. They tell us that consistent fouling would be recognized and punished, but it certainly wasn't. You know, typical. Carles [Gil], I think we told them at some point in the first half, was fouled six times already. So, you know, I don't even know if this referee has much experience or not. We talked to the fourth official about it and you know, that was that. It's fairly typical though."
On if he has an update on Jozy Altidore and whether he sustained an injury tonight:
Arena: "No. I don't."
On the level of concern with the early season struggles:
Arena: "I think we're going to be ready for the next game. I think, my own personal analysis is MLS teams are not capable of playing in Concacaf competition the beginning of the year. And you see all the teams, with the exception I guess Seattle continues to do well. We're not suited to be able to get into these competitions and maintain any kind of quality in the league. You see a team like New York City. They're not off to a good start as well and it's difficult for us in the early going. And we in particular had a disastrous start of the season with the logistics and the weather and all of those things. So, it's been a mess. I'm hopefully now as we get into the season and the weather now cooperates and we can train on a regular basis outside. We'll get better and you leave it at that. It's not an excuse, but we certainly did not step up to what we needed to do to deal with the kind of schedule we had in the early going and all of that stuff. What are you going to do? It's all part of the exercise. We have to move forward. Tonight, we didn't perform poorly. We got a little bit unlucky, but we probably should've just had a point and leave it at that."
On the message to the team heading into next week:
Arena: "Let's get ready for the next game. You know, we tell the players 'next play.' It's next game. That's all it is. This is all part of competing in athletics and if you don't have intestinal fortitude to deal with it, you don't belong here. So, that's all part of it. This is why, I think, people playing sports have such great character and are so successful in life, because they can deal with the highs and lows. And that's all part of what we do every day. So, it's kind of exciting to move forward and deal with the next game and get the team ready to go."
On the U.S. Men's National Team's cold-weather game against Honduras in Minnesota and if there is any relation to Matt Turner's injury:
Arena: "Well, personally I told them in advance, I thought it was stupid to be playing teams of that quality, thinking that they have to be in those kinds of conditions. Having said that, we've been playing in a mess in previous games here. But U.S. Soccer, I personally felt, could've played in any venue in the country and would've succeeded in those games. So, Matt's [Turner] injury that he has now is not a result of the injury he suffered in the game in Minnesota."
On if there was communication between the Revolution and U.S. Soccer concerning Matt Turner's injury:
Arena: "The injury he has now has nothing to do with the frostbite he suffered in Minnesota. There was no confusion. The frostbite was on one foot. The injury he has now is on the other foot. So, you can't - there's no connection to it. No. Having said that, Canada is not playing around with venues, but Canada's playing games in Canada. What are they going to do in February? Where are they going to go? The only place that could probably go to that's a little bit more suitable in terms of climate, is probably Vancouver, indoors on a turf field in a dome. But that's now been part of the game in Concacaf. And it probably always has been. When I coached the national team, there was always little gimmicks that countries played to try and get an edge."
Revolution Forward Justin Rennicks
On the emotions following tonight's loss:
Rennicks: "Yeah, it was definitely frustrating. I think it was mainly us just being a little bit unlucky because we had chances, but on to the next one."
On featuring in the Starting XI for the first time since 2019:
Rennicks: "Yeah it was great. I mean, it's been so long since I last started, I think since my rookie year, and being out there able to compete and just work as hard as I can feels really good."
On playing alongside forward Jozy Altidore:
Rennicks: "Yeah, I mean all preseason we were playing together and are always talking in the locker room, kind of planning out what the plan is for the game. We kind of have a little connection going and hopefully we get to keep playing together."
On adjusting to the professional level:
Rennicks: "The transition from college to professional soccer was a hard transition. Being here, this is my fourth team now. The physicality and just staying calm as you're playing, you know, it's all super important."
Revolution Defender Henry Kessler
On the emotions following tonight's loss:
Kessler: "Yeah it's really frustrating. I was just saying I thought that game, at worst, should've been 0-0, so to lose 1-0 is just really disappointing. They did a good job disrupting the flow. You know, they probably had 40 fouls. Something absurd like that. They really disrupted the game. And that is frustrating that it is something we have to deal with."
On how it felt playing 90 minutes for the first time this season:
Kessler: "Felt good. A little tired. [Playing] 90 [minutes] is the longest I've gone so far this year. But it felt good, and I'm glad to be back."
