New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Major League Soccer announced today that New England Revolution captain Steve Ralston has been named to the 2008 MLS All-Star Team, which is being coached by Revs head coach Steve Nicol. The MLS All-Stars, which already included Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis and midfielder Shalrie Joseph, will face English Premier League team West Ham United on Thursday, July 24, at BMO Field in Toronto. ESPN, Telefutura (Spanish) and CBC (Canada) will begin coverage at 7 p.m.
Ralston, along with Chivas USA's Jonathan Bornstein and FC Dallas' Juan Toja, were added to the team after three players on the original 18-man roster - the Revolution's Michael Parkhurst, Columbus' Robbie Rogers and Chivas USA's Sacha Kljestan - were named to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team this afternoon, forcing them to miss the All-Star Game.
Ralston, 34, leads the Revolution in both goals (6) and assists (4) in 12 MLS appearances this year. The "MLS Original" also owns the league's career records for appearances (349), starts (346), minutes played (30,863), assists (125) and game-winning assists (36).
This marks Ralston's seventh career MLS All-Star nod.
For the second consecutive year, Nicol and his staff will guide the MLS All-Stars after New England secured the league's highest points per game average as of June 29. The Revolution (10-4-3, 33 pts.) currently sits atop the Major League Soccer table, leading the league by six points.
With the changes today, the 18-man MLS All-Star active roster includes: goalkeepers Pat Onstad (Houston Dynamo) and Matt Reis (New England Revolution); defenders Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Jim Brennan (Toronto FC), Jimmy Conrad (Kansas City Wizards) and Frankie Hejduk (Columbus Crew); midfielders David Beckham (Los Angeles Galaxy), Cuauhtémoc Blanco (Chicago Fire), Dwayne De Rosario (Houston Dynamo), Christian Gomez (Colorado Rapids), Shalrie Joseph (New England Revolution), Pablo Mastroeni (Colorado Rapids), Steve Ralston (New England Revolution) and Juan Toja (FC Dallas); and forwards Juan Pablo Angel (New York Red Bulls), Edson Buddle (Los Angeles Galaxy), Kenny Cooper (FC Dallas) and Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy).
Ralston and the New England Revolution are in the midst of a three-week break from the MLS regular-season schedule while participating in SuperLiga 2008, a competition between the top four club teams in both the U.S. and Mexico. The Revs - who are atop Group B with a 2-0-0 record with a pair of 1-0 victories against Mexican powers Santos Laguna and Pachuca - cap group play on Sunday, July 20, in Fullerton, Calif., when they face Chivas USA at 8 p.m. ET. Telefutura (Spanish) is televising the entire SuperLiga 2008 tournament live, while both English and Spanish video is available at superliga2008.com and mlsnet.com.
