Reno Aces Game Notes at New Orleans

July 25, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release

Today's Game: Reno's offense looks to rebound following a one-hit performance in game one against New Orleans. Greg Gross will send starter Neftali Feliz to the mound who will be making his fifth start of the season and has not lost in three consecutive starts. Ildemaro Vargas is riding a 23-game hit streak and recorded the teams only hit and run of the evening on Tuesday night.

Last Game: The Aces were held in check in game one in the Big Easy. Tyler Cloyd took a perfect game into the seventh inning but had it wrecked by an Ildemaro Vargas double. Vargas' double in the top of the seventh inning extended his season-long hit streak to 23 games. The loss brings Reno to a record of 50-52 on the season with 38 games remaining on the 2018 regular season schedule.

Streaking: Ildemaro Vargas went 1-for-3 Tuesday night to continue his season-best 23-game hit streak. Vargas is 40-for-101 (.396) since June 24th with 9 doubles, 18 runs scored and 11 RBI. There have only been five players in Aces history with streaks of 20+ games. Tony Abreu (24, 2011), Jake Elmore (31, 2012) Chris Owings (23, 2013), Ketel Marte (22, 2017), Ildemaro Vargas (22, 2018). In 2017, Ketel Marte went 37-for-98, .378, with nine 2B, three 3B, one HR and 16 RBI from April 29 through May 22. His streak is tied with Mauricio Dubon of Colorado Springs for the longest active in the Pacific Coast League and is one shy of Daniel Castro's league-best 24-game streak.

One Hit Woes: Last night was the third time in franchise history where the Aces were held to just one hit. The first time came on August 18, 2012, in Tacoma. Hector Noesi tossed 7.2 innings and struck out 11 Reno batters. The second time came on April 15th of this year when the Fresno Grizzlies defeated Reno 5-1. Kent Emanual allowed one hit in six innings of work and added three strikeouts.

Good Parenting: Former Aces right-hander Clay Buchholz (3-1) earned the win last night for Arizona after allowing 1 run in 6.2 innings in his first start since June 24 @ Pirates. Archie Bradley (1.1 IP) struck out 3 of the 4 batters he faced. Steven Souza Jr. reached base 5 times, going 3-for-3 with a double, RBI walk and a hit by pitch.

Neftali The Starter: Neftali Feliz has been one of the best starters in the Pacific Coast League since making the change from the bullpen. In four starts from July 2 through July 19, Feliz is 3-0 with an ERA of 2.25. As a reliever, he was 1-3 in 25 games with an ERA of 6.82. He's held opponents to an average of .236 as a starter and walked just six in 20 innings of work.

JQ's Hot: Juniel Querecuto holds the highest batting average amongst all MiLB full season leagues. In 83 games played this season (47 with Double-A Jackson & 36 with Triple-A Reno), Querecuto is batting .354 (110-for-311) with 24 extra-base hits, 139 total bases, 37 RBI and 45 runs scored. He is the only player in Minor League Baseball with 110+ hits in less than 85 games played.
