Fresno Grizzlies News Release
The Fresno Tacos (59-43) conquered the Iowa Cubs (37-64) 2-1 Tuesday night from Chukchansi Park. With the victory, Fresno improved to 19-7 in the first game of a series (10-3 at home), 13-17 in one-run affairs and 35-8 when permitting three runs or less.
Tacos starter Josh James (4-4, win) hurled six innings, allowing two hits, one run (unearned), walking four and fanning 11. In 12 Triple-A starts, he has struck out 101 batters in 65 frames. James has recorded double-digit punchouts in half of those outings.
Fresno acquired a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Tyler White laced a single to left-center, knocking in Myles Straw (2-for-3). White expanded his current team-high hit streak to 10 games. This is his second-longest streak of 2018 (12, May 4-18).
Iowa knotted the score at one in the visitor's half of the sixth thanks to a pair of Tacos errors.
Nick Tanielu's (2-for-4) RBI single to center in the bottom of the sixth provided Fresno a 2-1 advantage. Jack Mayfield (2-for-3) was the recipient of the run. Cubs lefty Rob Zastryzny (3-2) suffered the loss after relieving Duane Underwood Jr. Underwood Jr. scattered seven hits, a walk, five whiffs and one run (earned) in five innings.
The Tacos bullpen held Iowa scoreless for the final three frames with Brendan McCurry securing his 12thsave of the year.
Straw stole one base on the evening, giving him a professional baseball best 52. In 33 Triple-A games, he has swiped 17 of 18 bags successfully. Overall, the staff notched 15 strikeouts on the night (at least one in every inning), pushing their season-total to 993 (tops in the PCL by 115). Memphis is second with 878 whiffs. A win extended Fresno's division lead to eight games over Tacoma with the magic number at 31.
Both squads continue the set with the middle contest of three Wednesday night from Chukchansi Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PT. Fresno RHP Cy Sneed (8-5, 3.72) and Iowa fellow righty Casey Coleman (2-1, 2.65) are the probable matchup.
