Lake County Captains News Release
(Hagerstown, MD)-Hagerstown righthander Orlando Rengel tossed six shutout innings Wednesday, leading the Suns to a 5-0 shutout of the Lake County Captains at Municipal Stadium.
The win snapped Hagerstown's four-game losing streak, and sent the Captains to their fourth loss in the last five. The teams have split the first two games of the four-game series.
Rengel, who has split time this season between the Suns and the Mets' short-season affiliate in Brooklyn, extended his scoreless streak to 12 innings over his last two starts. Rengel (2-1) allowed only two hits, while walking three and striking out seven. Rengel left after the sixth inning and got relief help from Edgar Alfonzo and Joe Serfasss to complete the whitewash. Serfass worked the final two innings and has now given up just one run in 13 innings against the Captains this season.
The Suns (12-22, 54-50) scored an unearned run in the third against Captains starter Aaron Laffey (7-5). Ryan Coultas reached on a throwing error by shortstop Brian Finegan. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a bunt single by Carlos Gomez. With Armand Gaerlan at the plate, the Suns executed a double-steal, with Coultas beating the return throw to the plate for a 1-0 lead.
The Suns' Derran Watts chipped in RBI singles off Laffey in the fourth and sixth to push the lead to 3-0, and the Suns tallied two more unearned runs against Brandon Rickert in the seventh, taking advantage of Rickert's own throwing error, to make it 5-0.
Laffey scattered seven hits and walked none.
Rengel walked Trevor Crowe in the first inning. Crowe was then struck in the right hand by Josh Noviskey's line drive single. Crowe left the game the next inning and was to have X-rays taken of his hand on Wednesday afternoon.
Righthander Adrian Schau pitched a perfect eighth for Lake County (16-22, 56-52).
Chris Gimenez (knee) and Marshall Szabo (ankle) both returned action for the Captains after missing the last week. Szabo was 0-3, while Gimenez went 2-4 with a single and double.
The Captains and Suns will return to action Thursday evening at 7:05 (WELW AM 1330).
