BlueClaw's rally falls short, lose to Hickory

Hickory, NC -The BlueClaws (19-20) dropped game two of their four game series to the Crawdads (22-16), Single-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday 11-9. The BlueClaws could not climb out of an eight run hole after Hickory plated nine runs over the second, third and fourth innings.

Lakewood entered the ninth trailing 11-6 and put together a rally to put the tying run on first base. The BlueClaws got a lead off base hit from Greg Golson, then Brad Harman walked and Jason Jaramillo connected for a one out single to load the bases. Doug Gredvig drew a bases loaded walk to force a run in and make it 11-7.

Sam Orr then reached on a fielder's choice allowing Harman to score to cut the lead to 11-8. With runners at the corners and two outs Chris Klemm connected for an RBI base hit to make it 11-9. That's all Lakewood could get though leaving the tying run on base.

Hickory broke the game open in the third inning plating four runs on five hits to take a 6-1 lead. The Crawdads started off the inning with three consecutive base hits to load the bases. Neil Walker then reached on a fielder's choice allowing a run to score and a fielding by Harman allowed another run to score and Hickory was up 4-1. Hickory added a run on Anthony Bocchino's RBI base hit then with two outs Mike Hofius connected for an RBI base hit to cap off the scoring in the inning.

The Crawdads plated three more runs in the fourth with one out to chase starter Nate Johnson from the ball game. Johnson was able to get the first batter of the inning to ground out but then allowed three consecutive hits, one of them a two-run homer.

Pedro Powell reached on a bunt single then moved up to second on Dzurilla's fielding error. On the play Dzurilla flipped to Johnson covering first and the ball went over Johnson's head and into the dugout. Brian Bixler followed up with an RBI base hit to give Hickory a 7-1 lead. Walker then crushed a two-run homer to right, his 11th of the year, to give the Crawdads a 9-1 lead.

Johnson lasted just 3 1/3 innings allowing nine runs on eleven hits while walking nobody and striking out three. Johnson had three errors committed behind him to help the Crawdads.

Lakewood took an early lead scoring a run in their first at bat. Golson led off the game with a solo homer down the left field line to give the BlueClaws a 1-0 lead.

Lakewood continues their series with Hickory on Thursday night. The BlueClaws will send right-hander Maximo De La Cruz (7-8, 4.38) to the mound. The Crawdads will counter with their right-hander Yoann Torrealba (3-4, 3.72). First pitch on Wednesday is at 7:05 p.m. with on-air time at 6:50 p.m. on 1310 WADB and www.blueclaws.com.

This season, the Lakewood BlueClaws are celebrating their fifth anniversary of providing great fun in the Jersey sun. Among the great promotions, fireworks every Friday night home game and kids eat free Monday Nights courtesy of Shop Rite. In addition, the BlueClaws will host games against the New York Mets affiliate.
