Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, Ga. - GreenJackets starter Anthony Pannone picked up his first victory as a GreenJacket and Nick Conte went 3-3 with an RBI as the GreenJackets beat Rome, 4-1, Wednesday at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The GreenJackets evened their record at 19-19 and sit 3.5 games behind Southern Division leader Kannapolis, who lost tonight at Lexington. Rome goes to 18-20 on the second half of the season. Pannone kept the Braves in check for his five innings of work, giving up six hits, most of which were not hit hard and one run, which was unearned. In the meantime, Pannone lowered his ERA from 3.29 to 2.41 and was the beneficiary of immediate run support in the GreenJackets half of the first.
With one out in the first, Jon Armitage reached safely when shortstop Bo Brown misplayed the ground ball. Brian Horwitz followed and lined a double down the left field line, driving in Armitage for his team leading 69th RBI. After Julian Benavidez singled to left, advancing to third, Simon Klink singled to right, driving in Horwitz for an early 2-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, after Dan Trumble reached on a fielder's choice and stole second and third, Nick Conte hit a single to right that drove in Trumble for a 3-0 advantage. After Rome got one run back in the top of the sixth, the GreenJackets answered with one of their own. After Klink and Trumble struck out, Jason Columbus walked. Conte singled to the gap in left center, moving Columbus over to third. Lisandro Disla was at bat when Conte broke for second. When the throw went down to second from catcher Clint Sammons, Columbus broke for home. Brown's throw back to the catcher was in time but Columbus was safe when Sammons couldn't handle the throw. Craig Whitaker pitched two innings of scoreless relief to pick up his fifth win of the season. While the GreenJackets won their 11th game against Rome tonight, they couldn't help but think of teammate Alex Requena. Requena was back in Charleston, where the GreenJackets last played, in the hospital. Requena had to have his appendix taken out after complaining of stomach pains. He is out indefinitely and no timetable for his return has been established.
