Renegades Win Over IronBirds

ABERDEEN, Md. - The Hudson Valley Renegades used early offense and clutch pitching to defeat the Aberdeen IronBirds 3-2 on Friday night at Leidos Field.

The Renegades got on the board in the top of the third when Tyler Hardman lined a double to left, chasing home Everson Pereira with the first run of the game. Hardman finished the game 2-for-4 with a double, a RBI, and a walk.

Hudson Valley added two more against Houston Roth in the top of the fourth. Eduardo Torrealba plated Aaron Palensky with a single to left-center, and scored two batters later on a Trey Sweeney single to give the Renegades a 3-0 lead.

Blas Castaño worked in and out of trouble, stranding the bases loaded in the third and runners on first and third in the fourth, before Aberdeen touched him up in the bottom of the fifth. Darell Hernaiz lined a single to right, scoring Coby Mayo to cut the advantage to 3-1.

Castaño departed after 4.2 innings, during which he allowed one run on six hits, striking out four and walking three. The run allowed in the fifth was the first earned run allowed by the Renegades pitching staff in 25.2 innings, a streak dating back to Tuesday night.

Nelson Alvarez (1-1) stranded the bases loaded after relieving Castaño in the fifth, and contributed 1.2 scoreless innings of work. Nelvin Correa allowed a run to the IronBirds in the bottom of the eighth on an A.J. Graffanino groundout to cut the lead to 3-2.

Alex Mauricio shut the door in the ninth, stranding the tying run on second base to secure his fourth save of the season and the victory.

With a single in the seventh inning, Pereira extended his on-base streak to 15 consecutive games, and has safely reached in 38 of his 42 games played this season.

Hudson Valley continues its series with Aberdeen on Saturday night at Leidos Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m., with coverage on the Renegades Baseball Network begins at 5:45. RHP Josue Panacual (1-0, 0.00) takes the mound for the Renegades, while RHP Justin Armbruester (2-0, 3.40) gets the start for the IronBirds.
