Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Aberdeen, MD - Kyle Holloway hit a Grand Slam in the fifth inning off of IronBirds pitcher Alex Schmarzo, and that was the difference in Hudson Valley's 8-5 win over the Aberdeen IronBirds Tuesday night.

The IronBirds jumped on top in the bottom of the first. Mychal Givens hit a two-out single and then Joe Velleggia knocked him in with an RBI double, and it staked Aberdeen to a 1-0 lead after one inning of play.

Hudson Valley struck in the top of the third. Raymond Church hit a one out double and Leonardo Reginatto reached on a Connor Narron throwing error, putting Renegades on first and third. Jeff Malm plated them both with an RBI single that gave Hudson Valley a 2-1 lead.

Aberdeen got back on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Wynston Sawyer bashed a double down the left field line and advanced to third when Narron singled to left. Riley Hornback hit a sacrifice fly to center, allowing Sawyer to score, and tied the ballgame at two.

The Renegades did not wait long to take the lead back for good. Alex Schmarzo allowed a bunt single to Diogenes Luis, but then struck out two Renegades. He then proceeded to walk three straight Hudson Valley hitters, which scored Church and gave Hudson Valley a 3-2 lead. Kyle Holloway took away all the suspense in the inning when he hit a grand slam over the right field wall just inside the foul pole which blew the game open and pushed the Hudson Valley lead to 7-2.

Aberdeen got two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Austin Knight hit a one out double to left and Dudley Leonora singled, putting Knight on third. Glynn Davis then walked to load the bases. With two outs, Mychal Givens laced a two RBI single, which made the score 7-4.

Hudson Valley added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Malm walked, and then Holloway recorded another RBI with a single that allowed Malm to score, and it was 8-4 after the seventh.

Aberdeen made things interesting in the ninth. Velleggia led off the inning with a walk. Sawyer was hit by a pitch, but was out after Narron grounded into a double play. Velleggia advanced to third and scored when Hornback hit another RBI single to make the final score 8-5.

Schmarzo gets the loss for the IronBirds. He falls to 0-1 after pitching two innings. He allowed two hits, five runs (all earned), three walks, and recorded two strikeouts. David Laufer picked up his first win of the season for the Renegades.

The Lowell Spinners will come to town tomorrow. They will give Madison Younginer (0-1, 3.60) the ball, while the IronBirds will give Mike Wright, the Orioles 2011 third round pick, the start tomorrow. He is expected to go two innings, and then fifth round pick Matt Taylor will pitch two innings of relief. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

The Aberdeen IronBirds sold out season tickets for the 10thstraight season. Group packages and single-game tickets, however, are still available for the 2011 season. For ticket information, contact our box office at (410) 297-9292 or visit us online at www.IronBirdsbaseball.com.
