Jamestown Jammers News Release
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Thomas Peale hurled ï¬Âve shutout innings to earn his ï¬Ârst win of the season, and the Jamestown Jammers moved in to sole possession of ï¬Ârst place after blanking Williamsport, 5-0, Tuesday night at Bowman Field.
Peale and two other relievers combined to throw the team's ï¬Ârst shutout of the season, which put Jamestown a game in front of both Auburn and Mahoning Valley for ï¬Ârst place in the Pinckney Division. The 6-3 righty struck out ï¬Âve in ï¬Âve innings and allowed just three hits.
Rand Smith led the offense with two hits including a two-run homer, and Jobduan Morales belted a double and scored two runs.
The Jammers got on the board in the top of the ï¬Âfth when Morales roped a two bagger to straight away center. Marquise Cooper promptly grounded out to third, and ï¬Ârst baseman Patrick Murray tried to get Morales trying to advance, but he threw the ball away to allow the Jamestown catcher to score.
The score would stay that way until the seventh inning as Tom Peale and Colin Kleven silenced the opposing bats. Jamestown starter Peale would not allow a hit after giving up back- to-back singles in the second hitter, and the only runner to reach was hit by a pitch as he retired 10 of the ï¬Ânal 11 he faced, while Kleven limited Jamestown to just three hits in six innings.
However, once the Crosscutters went to the bullpen, the ï¬âood gates would open as Jamestown scored in every inning.
Morales was beaned with two outs and nobody on in the seventh. He moved to second on a passed ball then scored on a double by Rand Smith to extend the Jamestown lead.
Williamsport's one and only chance to tie the game came in the bottom half of the inning.
The Crosscutters loaded the bases on a walk, single and hit by pitch with two outs. Frank Reed, who was just called up from the Gulf Coast League, worked out of the jam with a strikeout.
Another Williamsport miscue allowed Jamestown to tack on an insurance run in the eighth. Perez lined a single to left then moved up to third on a throwing error by Aaron Altherr. Cooper grounded to short, and Williamsport tried to get Perez breaking from third; however, the Jamestown shortstop beat the throw to make it 3-0.
Rand Smith would belt a two-run homer to cap the Jamestown offense in the ninth inning, and Kenneth Toves tossed two scoreless innings to slam the door and earn his ï¬Ârst save of the season.
Kleven was the hard-luck loser for Williamsport. He went ï¬Âve innings and gave up just one earned run with four strikeouts.
The Jammers will now return home for a three-game series with the Auburn Doubledays starting Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
