LOWELL, MA - The Connecticut Tigers and Lowell Spinners split the doubleheader tonight at LeLacheur Park, with the Tigers falling 11-7 in the opening game, before taking the victory 2-0 in the nightcap on Tuesday evening.
The Tigers took an early 2-0 lead in game one on a Dean Green two-run homer, the first of his professional career. However, the Spinners came back with a solo home run from Keury De La Cruz in the bottom of the first and a four-run second inning to take a 5-2 lead.
Connecticut would cut into the Lowell lead with a two-run third inning, making it a 5-4 game. However, the wheels would fall off for the Tigers in the fourth.
The first five men in the inning reached for the Spinners, including a leadoff triple from De La Cruz. The big hit in the inning and the difference in the ballgame was a grand slam from Seth Schwindenhammer, part of the six-run fourth frame.
The Tigers would add a pinch-hit two-run homer from Les Smith, his first of the year, but it was too little to late as Connecticut dropped the opening game of the doubleheader 11-7.
Connecticut's pitching staff would come back strong in the second game of the doubleheader. After the staff gave up 11 runs on 15 hits in the first game, Clemente Mendoza, Melvin Mercedes and Daniel Bennett combined for a one-hit shutout of the Spinners in game two.
Both of the Tigers runs came in the third inning. Following a Chad Wright walk, which extended his on-base streak to 12 straight games, Dean Green drove him in with a double. Jeff Holm followed with an RBI base hit to drive in Green, as that would be all the offense needed for the 2-0 win in game two.
Green had four RBI's in the two games, while Jason King came a homerun shy of the cycle in the first game of the doubleheader.
The Tigers will now head to New York to begin a three-game series with the Staten Island Yankees tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM.
