BURLINGTON, VT - A couple of RBI groundouts and more stellar pitching led the way for the Hudson Valley Renegades as they shutout the Vermont Lake Monsters 2-0 on Monday night from Centennial Field. It was the fourth-straight win for Hudson Valley as they moved over .500 for the first time this season. It was also their second shutout of the four-game streak.
The Renegades' first run came in the second as leftfielder Beau Brundage and catcher Jonathan Embry each singled to put runners at the corners. Third baseman Cristhian Pedroza came up next with one out and grounded out to second to bring Brundage in from third and give the Renegades the lead.
The Lake Monsters never really threatened against Renegades starter Zack Trageton who allowed only two hits and struck out five over six innings of work. The best chance Vermont had to score came in the seventh when they put runners at first and second with two away thanks to a single and a walk off Hudson Valley reliever Colby White. However, White was able to get leftfielder Shane Selman to fly out to center to end the inning and the threat.
Hudson Valley finally added an insurance run in the eighth. Third baseman Luis Arcendo walked and centerfielder Garrett Hiott singled to right to moved Arcendo to third with no one out. After a strikeout, rightfielder Hill Alexander hit a slow roller to third. The only play by Vermont third baseman Michael Woodworth was to first, which allowed Arcendo to score and up the Renegades' lead to 2-0.
Reliever Andrew Gross came on for White in the eighth inning and retired all six men he faced with two strikeouts to garner his second save of the season. Trageton (3-2) got the much-deserved win, while the loss fell to Tyler Baum (0-2) of the Lake Monsters after he allowed a run on five hits over three innings. The right-hander also struck out four.
The Renegades only garnered six hits with Hiott picking up three singles to give him seven hits for the series. The Lake Monsters, meanwhile, only registered three singles over the trio of Trageton, White and Gross.
Hudson Valley will now go for the sweep as they take on Vermont in an 11:05 a.m. start tomorrow. The Renegades will send righty Rodolfo Sanchez (0-0, 2.33 ERA) to the hill against fellow-righty Yorlenis Noa (0-2, 4.40 ERA) of the Lake Monsters.
Hudson Valley returns home Wednesday when they start a three-game series against the Staten Island Yankees. Game time is scheduled for 7:05.
