Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
Hickory, N.C. - The Hudson Valley Renegades were on the comeback trail, but rain forced an early end on Saturday in an 8-6 defeat to the Hickory Crawdads in five innings at L.P. Frans Stadium.
The Crawdads jumped on Drew Thorpe in the bottom of the first, striking for four runs on four hits, including a two-run home run by Tucker Mitchell to take an early lead. Hickory tacked on two more in the bottom of the second on solo homers by Keyber Rodriguez and Abimelec Ortiz to open up a 6-0 advantage.
The Renegades started their comeback in the top of the fourth, striking for three runs to halve the deficit to 6-3. After Larson Kindreich walked Anthony Garcia and Antonio Gomez, Eduardo Torrealba drove them both in with a two-run single off Jackson Kelley. Two batters later, Ben Cowles drove in Torrealba with a double to right.
Hickory struck back with two runs off Thorpe in the bottom of the fourth on an Ortiz two-run double. Thorpe (10-2) finished the night allowing eight runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings, walking one and striking out four.
Hudson Valley continued to scratch away in the top of the fifth when Garcia blasted a solo home run to right, his third of the series to cut into the gap. Spencer Jones delivered a two-run single later in the inning to get the Renegades to within two runs at 8-6.
After Carlos Gomez faced the minimum in the bottom of the fifth, the skies opened up and the game was called after a 25-minute rain delay.
